My first passion (OFF TOPIC)

I've been detecting for three years but I've been practicing falconry for about fifteen. Detecting season is winding down but very soon me and my partner here will go hunt for things more furry and less metallic. He's a juvenile red tailed hawk, about 6 or 7 months old. He's still in training right now but soon he'll be flying free and chasing the bunnies that I push out for him. His name is Pistol but they don't really respond to their names, it's just fictitious.

I hope I don't get flamed for posting this here but the way I see it, there's so much more to life than working and getting. Life is for enjoying and sharing.
Happy Hunting, Steve

Nice looking falcon!!

Thats awesome to be quite honest. They are beautiful but terror to small furries!!

That's awesome, Steve!! Thanks for sharing with us your other passions!! That's a beautiful red tailed hawk. How big will his wingspan get when he's full grown??

I've got another passion also besides detecting. I love to fish. Since you shared some photos with us, I will add a few photos of my recent fish trip. I've had a lot of success this past two months catching halibut here in S. Cal. I've lost count to the number of halibut I've caught...I'm still in awe of the numbers. Their spawn is just about over now, and the bite has tapered off quite a bit. It was a lot of fun while it lasted. A lot of folks don't realize that the halibut is a predator fish, not a bottom feeder. .it will chase a fish completely out of the water, just like a tuna or a bass. I don't use live bait though to catch them.... I use a plastic lure on a lead jig head. It's a lot more challenging, IMHO, and my preferred type of fishing. I've been using this technique for years in freshwater and saltwater. Here's one of the halibut I caught a few weeks ago. It was 31" long, and around 16 pounds. Good times!!!!

My Oh My...I'm a true fan of the red tailed hawk. As we drive up and down the interstate we keep a count of the red tails that we see. A large red tail lives in my neighborhood and I see him two or three times a week. He's been around our area for about four years now and has one favorite tree he uses for a perch. Thanks for sharing those great pics. TomB

Yeah that is very cool. I always wanted to try but I am not prepared for the comitment. I have found in my life that some things that "I have always wanted to do" are best appreciated and admired when done by others.

That is probably my favorite bird and common here in Eastern Washington.

Cap'n, Once they leave the nest they're as big as they will ever be. I never measure wingspan but it's usually between 3.5 to 4 feet. That's some great looking halibut, MMMMMMM, yummy. I used to head down to jersey for fluke but the keeper ratio has declined over the last few years and it's too expensive to keep coming home empty handed.
