My first "old" silver

I was just out killing time at a local park yesterday and came up w/ this nice find - a 1902 barber. I've only been detecting for about 3 weeks now but I'm starting to get the feel for how the XS works. I find myself using IM -6 much more except in real trashy areas....then I use a pretty tight discrim pattern.
Though I've found a silver dime, quarter, pendant and ring...this by far is my best find to date.
I'm hoping a stealth 8 will help me out in these real trashy areas along w/ an X-1 probe to help me find what's in a couple "mystery holes"

Nice finds for only 3 weeks! took me 6 months to find my first silver.. but then again I wasnt using a Minelab then keep using the iron mask.. maybe even lower it to -8 or lower if your in any iron at all.. the X8 and X1 will help a ton in the trash.. rarely take off the X8 anymore even in clean spots, might use the Joey as much though when that gets here

What is X8 and X1, I am new to the mine lab, is that a setting for the XS, and do you set the iron mask at -8 and then go back directly to detect, or what is the procedure to set iron mask, Ken

Very nice quarter,I have yet to find on got a few washingtons and mercs and 2 barber dimes but nothing like that..well done..iwant an x-8 myself,,,,, cs

Ken,
The X1 is the pinpointing probe made for the Explorer by Sunray and the X 8 is the 8 inch coil that is also made for the Explorer by Sunray that makes learning easier.
For iron mask you push the button once and you are in the set the iron mask mode where you set it to where you want it and when done hit the iron mask again and you are in iron mask, push it one more time and you are back to your disc mode and out of iron mask. A lot of us run in the iron mask mode and listen to all the tones it makes and dig the ones we like.

Since I'm new to this all...my way might not be the most efficient but here's what I've been doing.
To start out, I made a pretty tight discrim pattern (mainly just the upper/right corner). This pattern typically just passes Q's/Dimes/and some pennies. I use this pattern when I hit heavy junk areas or search playgrounds for pocket change.
Even though I have that pattern, I typically don't use it if I'm hunting for deep stuff in non-trash areas. I just hit the Iron Mask button once...set the level (I was using -6) and then hit the detect button. This returns me to the Smart mode w/ just IM set.
If I find something that is close to on top..I then can just hit the IM button again (to turn IM off) and see if it is probably junk at the top or something else). Truth be told, I've now gotten to the point where I can guess what's a pop-top and what's not...but putting the discrim pattern back on helps me "remember" where the coins/silver typically are at vs. the junk.
I only start filtering stuff out if it's close to the top (2-3") or if I'm getting tired or ready to go. If it's early in the hunt and the object is deep...I'll dig it just for curiousity sake and learn what it is...
As someone else stated...the X8 is a different (smaller) coil and the X1 is a probe that "Y"'s in off of your existing coil. It has a greater depth than a typical pinpointer and acts as a coil when activated (so I understand).
Hope that helps...
~Tim
