My First O Minted Silver And A Bunch Of CW Minie Balls

Sooper Dave

Well-known member
Got out for a couple of hours this afternoon. I went to an old house that has a huge yard that I have been wanting to try for a while. I got permission to go and headed straight to the front yard. I made a pass down the sidewalk and found a couple of old wheaties. Close to the road I got a great signal that came in like a deep Indian, dug me a deep plug and saw that awesome sight of a Minie Ball, but this one is the bigger .69 caliber. Before you know it I was digging one after another from a small area. One I dug was an Enfield with an "L" stamped inside the base and dug some .58 calibers as well. I have dug a few CW bullets but it is still an awesome thrill to see these in the dirt. In between the bullets I was digging a few clad coins and got a 12-46 and thought it would be another deep clad quarter, I was excited to see silver and was a nice Barber. I did not know it had a mint mark until I was taking photos and I was very happy to see the little "O". It turned out to be an awesome afternoon for relics and silver. HH David

Excellent finds !

Great hunt!! Congrats and HH

Beautiful dime! The bullets aren't too shabby either. That was a nice yard!

Great Hunt, love those bullets, and that barber as well, Congrats.

Those .69 caliber Minies are awesome finds; and they look like they're all "drops".
I remember the first ones I dug years ago; holding one in my hand I thought, NO WONDER there were so many amputations during the War; these are monster slugs to get hit with !

I wonder what it was like to have to carry those things around...musta been heavy...Way to go on the 1901O...I have a 1903O...

HH,

Thanks everyone. Yes I always think about how bad it would be to be hit in a bone with one of these and not kill you. These guys were a touch crazy to fight the way they did.
I also think about how heavy a pouch would be with all the lead a powder that had to be carried. The conditions were terrible as well with the rain, cold weather and lack of food. They had to be tough as nails and dedicated to the fight. All these things go through my mind when I see these bullets and gives me a chill to find such awesome pieces of history.
