Well My Mum came south to visit, and I had to show off my new detector and give her a go seeing she loves this kind of stuff. We went out to the old campground across the road under the trees and we got a few early New Zealand coins, I also got this 1916 US Cent, Very corroded, as it has been in salty sand. I thought it was interesting to post as I have been reading about all you guys in the US finding these cents, and I happen to come across one over the road from me on the other side of the world..... why on earth is it there. The site was apparently used from the 1920s then a layer of new pinetrees which are now about 30 years old are sitting on the dunes. There are some old shower blocks and septic tank remains which have blown out of the sand. I have found that where these coins are there doesnt seem to be much other metal. Mum came up with the Idea that when the Us soldiers were in NZ in WW2 one of them took a young lady out to the beach and it fell out of his pocket. hey its not a bad explanation, But last week I also found a 38 special cartridge case unfired in the same general area. And we dont use revolvers In NZ, Not many anyway!!!

I also found my first ring, will have to post pics later, old but metal is not yet identified still soaking. 3 50% silver coins some UK and NZ pennies and a NZ halfpenny.

We went to another beach yesterday and got a very worn condition 1908 English threepence.

Man congrats on that well traveled wheat cent! It sounds like you had a very good hunt! Good work on the ring also, beale.

Way to go. I would think that it is probably a very good chance your mother is correct.

The stories of "how" and "why" are part of what make detecting so much fun. I once found an early 1900s Palestine coin at an old school in (very) rural west Alabama. Makes you go 'Hmmmm?".
