My first coins found!

I am trying to figure out how everybody does parks & school grounds without digging up their grass? I called 2 old schools who said I can metal detect after school hours but I was thinking I may want to be in the grass & that would require digging their grass . Tommorrow I hope to try a real big ball field that has all gravel driveways & parking spaces & bleachers. It has multiple ball fields & LOTS of people go to this ball field in the spring & summer. I figure I can't hurt the gravel.

Last night I found a quarter & penny within 5 minutes. I was pretty excited for only .26! These were my 1st coins. I went to an old driveway that belongs to a friend nearby.

A friend lives in a 40 year old house. She told me her husband was throwing old apples across the yard to a field & his wedding band fell off somewhere when he threw the apples but they don't know where it fell so I thought I would try her yard. She also has gravel driveway.
There is a road within 7 miles of my house called Goldmine Rd ( I don't know anything about the history of Goldmine Rd) I read there has been gold in Pageland SC so I can check out family hunting land there. There is a stream running thru the land. Reed Gold Mine is approx 20 miles from my house so you never know if I might find some rocks with gold someday.
I have alot to learn but I am willing to make the effort.

Someone mentioned that they didnt have any luck in wet sand with the Silver. Does it do better in dry sand? I plan to try the beach this spring. We are approx 150 -160 miles from the NC coast & we usually go at least 2-3 times a year. I like to go fishing if they are biting but it seems they never bite anymore like they used to when I was younger so I will go to go treasure hunting instead unless the fish are biting real good! I think my 7 year old grandson will have fun treasure hunting with me. He also loves gardening!

I am so thankful to have this wonderful forum. You all are so warm, friendly & helpful.

I apoligize for such a long post. Bye for now. Cathy in NC

Congrats on your first coins! There will be more to come. If you hunt the beach, the detector will be fine in the dry sand. In the wet sand however you will have to turn down the sensitivity. If you are looking for gold then set your discrimination at iron and dig all good signals. You will dig trash such as foil wrappers and pulltabs but that's the trade off for gold. And it is true for all detectors. HH

Cathy,
There are videos on youtube that demonstrate how to dig a plug in sod and also coin pop with a screwdriver or probe.

Which one you use depends a lot on the depth of the coin. (something you will learn to estimate).

If you properly pinpoint and dig a plug, nobody will know you were there. I was at an old school property for days removing a lot of targets. Occasionally I find large targets or a vertical pipe under the soil (vertical pipes make for a good signal but are not worth removing). Well, I went back to the area a couple days later and started to dig the same vertical pipe target.. Until I stuck my digger in the ground I couldn't tell that was a plug I dug just 2-3 days earlier. I'm not bragging, its just how good you will get with the proper tools and a whole lot of practice!

Learning to dig a decent plug in your own yard is a good start. Get a pinpointer if you don't already have one. You will often butcher the plug trying to find the target without it. A good sharp digging tool will improve your results. I dig a 3 sided square plug and flip it up like a trap door....seems to hide better in the sod and you won't lose the plug orientation.

Finding coins is addicting. Id be searching for that ring.I have found friends rings twice now and have a lead on a third one.It feels good to hand that ring back to them.
