Is this an old bullet or a modern muzzle loader round?
i hunt but not with a muzzle loader. How do you tell?
The base is hollow.

Hmmmmmm......I'll hazard a guess: I think it's modern. My reasoning is that it's a two-ringer with the base ring MUCH wider. I've never seen an old one quite like that, but I've seen modern moulds with that style. Also, although it has obviously been in the ground long enough to get a patina, it doesn't have the white lead oxidation that lots of really old (over 100 years or so) bullets have. Look at posts of CW bullets to see what I mean.

But just a guess!!!

Thanks Marc and Stumpr.
it's not very white but i did a search for CS Gardner and i agree thats what it looks like.
the base is hollowed deep.

After doing a little research (which I should have done before I "guessed"), I agree. It's certainly a Gardner style bullet. It appears old, so probably original. Maybe the oxidation has been "polished off" through handling, or maybe the soil was kinder than in my area.

Regardless, great find!!! Wish I could find one just like it!

And my apologies for the undoubtedly false lead of it being modern.

no problem Marc. I was thinking the same as you.
I had looked at web sites with civil war type bullets and had only noticed the three ring type.
