My First Bird Band!

Big South wind this morning, read the Forums and headed out...In the water at 9am at a little inland lake..it was frozen halfway across, but there was a small open patch of water where a creek dumped into it...
I wore my FroggTogg pants inside my leaky waders and that helped greatly...dead rotten leaves on the bottom made scooping a mess...Hit this tiny Sterling ring thinking it was another copper penny, nearly didnt see it in the scoop in all the mud and rotten leaves..
The Wife loves the bird band and it fits her perfect! Must be off of a goose or swan I figure. I'll tell her 'swan', it sounds more romantic..:inlove:

The Pro ran fine like normal but the batts dropped off fast in the cold, dropped 2 bars in a few hours...so I called it and came home after a 3hr soak....somehow a dry leaf got up into the heater fan under Rosies console and makes an awful racket...like a playing card in a bicycle spoke...pulled over and popped the hood... took a look to see how easy it would be to get in there and remove it...I guess I'll just run that fan until the leaf goes away...I hope thats what it is...it could be a dry leaf that got blown into MY heater core and is rattling around between my ears in all that empty space!...Mud out..
Mud..

Good job on what had to have been a down right cold hunt. That's a nice "honker" of a bird band and silver is always good.:beers: Hope Rosie chews up the leaf. HH jim tn

I found one in white lake. there is a website you can enter the number and they will tell you when it was banded, where it was banded, and what kind of bird it was. My bird was from Indiana. They will also send you a certificate.

Really? I could use a certificate! Matter of fact, that may come in quite handy to deal with a situation JimTn just escaped from! "I'm here to locate a missing bird band officer, official business, want to see my certificate?"...

Theres an 800 phone number on this one..I'll call them tomorrow...you know that place sturrat...alot of dead things get blown ashore there....

whenever the water you are detecting has ANY ice - that's hard core hunting. Time to gather up some of that clad and buy some aquaseal for those leaky waders. Got a pair of insulated ones that I've kept in service that way. You bird band is larger than any I've found. Congrats on the silver and having the moxie to go for it. When many of the forums have slowed a bit you can be counted on for something entertaining.

Dang Mud, you're a beast! That was good thinking on the Frogg Toggs, but I bet it was still cold, lol. Congrats on the silver & bird band too. I'm 53 and haven't shot or found one yet. I know a lot of guys that have several. They keep them on their call lanyards. Let us know what you find out about it....Please.

I just got off the phone with them not 5 mins ago!...seems this bird was banded on 7-30-2008 in Winisk, Ontario Canada...The Lady I spoke with says her husband detects and loves it! I told her to have him give me a call and I would direct him here if he does...I cant find Winisk on the mapquest...so I have no idea how far it is from here...they said they will email me a certificate that contains more info about the bird..I'll provide the details when it shows up here..

Good hunting Mud,:clapping: you're a tough guy ... but you're not goose and swan tell it ...:cheekkiss:
I also found a bird ring, when I knew it was a very easy common cormorant, the bird was still with the ring on. I take the bird (which was dead, of course) home, I buried the corpse to retrieve the bones and wrote a letter to the owner of the ring, British museum. The bird had a few months when he died, he was born in Wales UK and had flown up here a lot miles, told the British M.
Yes, also I collect skulls of animals. but I find dead. I also gives the people I know. Donations are welcome ...
A great greeting to all

Mud nice going on the bird band. I found a really tiny one and was able to find out what kind of bird it was and where it was released. All done on the web.

Let us know if you find out something. It must of come of a really large bird.

Excellent recovery in difficult weather, Mud. If my waders had a leak, I couldn't get out in the water down south, much less where you are.
Hard core is right. Hate to see a flock of birds like John posted, that alligator bird looks hungry. Just imagine what an entire flock could do and they would love a fat old dude like me. Like the band and now that's another item on my long wish list and nice ring and like the little car. HH.
