My finds from NC

CASEPOWER

New member
I am very new to the hobby. I have only been out about three times using a very cheap detector. I hope to buy a 250 soon, so that is why I am posting on this board. My first and only silver is the mercury dime in the photo. The pennies to the right are the mystery to me. They are in very bad shape. I live in North Carolina in a part of the state known as the sandhills. This land was under water more recent than the rest of the state, but still a few thousand years back. I am a couple hundred miles from the coast. These items were dug from a creek that has been a popular swimming hole for many years. The bad pennies do seem to be 1982 and up as far as I can tell. Has anyone else noticed this problem? Jonathan

I think the pennies are the Zinc ones. They go to pieces really fast in certain types of soil.

They stopped making copper pennies in 1982, went to the hated Dirty Rotten Zinkers!! Don't take 'em long in the ground to go rotten either. Nice bunch of loot you got there. You're gonna love the 250!!

If you do this well with a "cheap detector" I am anxious to see what you do with an ACE 250. I own an ACE 250 and a GTP 1350 and it is a toss up as to which one I like best.

I am using a Treasure Tracker DX5000 made by First Texas Manufacturing Co. I paid $25 for it many years back, but have just started to get real interested. I have searched the web, but can't find any info on the detector. I was guessing it was made by the same company as Bounty Hunter. It is made cheap, but I seem to pick up ever piece of trash and a few coins. I hope to have the 250 soon. I was going to go for the $212.00 e-bay deal that they offer with free shipping. My son goes with me, so I will keep this old one as it's not worth much anyway.

1982 is when the mint started shucking out the cheap pennies and they all turn to crud in the right soil.

Hi Jonathan.
It looks like you've got your thinking cap on already as to where to detect.I also started out with a Bounty Hunter and had similar problems. It caused me to nearly give up on the hobby.Since then I have bought a machine that is very similar to the ace250 and haven't looked back.I may even buy one a bit down the track.I think that you will love it and wonder how you ever managed to play without one.Good luck and aways keep an eye out for places where you see people gather on a regular bases(some spots that you see will surprise you).

From the land of the Bluenose...lots of shell casings ...hope it wasn't a school yard but a hunting area. Thanks for sharing and good hunting!

I live East of Seagrove a few miles in the sand hills. 20 miles West is pure clay, but there is some hard clay around the swimming hole where I found these coins. We had 5 inches of rain the other day. The small 12' by 25' beach I was hunting on is between 15 and 18 foot under water now.

That is amazing, That storm dumped alot of rain, good for the grought we having. I was in Ralweigh that day and it rained 6".

I live near Winston Salem and relic and shoot up and down Hwy 52. Have you been over near Reed's Gold Mine? Your in a great area for the revolutionary troops to have marched. Have you gotten the hunting fever yet, to go to your county library and do some research yet?

The hobby is loads of fun, my son and I have our MD's in the trunk all the time, just in case!!!!

Talk to you later.

Michael
