My Finds From Fridays Hunt With Larry

Had a chance to hunt for a couple hours with Larry this last Friday. I didn't find any gold but I didn't get skunked either. I found $2.68 in clad, a clad dime that had been flattened by a train, a strange small lincoln cent, a 1950 Rutherford B. Hayes token from the Meet The Presidents Game, and an old brass Eagle padlock. Lets get out there and hunt. That is a cute lock Daryl. What do you think of the small cent? Could be on a dime planchet or someone went to a lot of trouble to cut down a penny and roll the edge.

Those are some really unique finds. That Lincoln cent is really cool and I love the lock. Tokens are always nice too. You did pretty good for only being out for the short time. I can't wait to see what you find out about that little penny. HH, Nancy

Nice finds, Darryl, The small cent looks like Lincoln's chest has a different angle than the comparison coin.

I'm not sure at this time what to think about the small cent. Every detail on the obverse seems to be in proportion with a normal cent. The reverse is totally blank. A portion of the word liberty is there and the date shows 19 and then a small section of a 6 or 0. The U.S. mint does make coins for a few other countries so maybe its stamped on a wrong planchet. If someone cut it down and rerolled the rim they did a very good job. As soon as I get its weight and take measurements I will post it on several coin forums to get their input.

I used a poor choice for a comparison coin. They do look different in the photo. I just checked it against a newer less worn cent and they seem to match.

Extremely interesting. Keep us posted if you find out anything on it. That's really cool! HH, Nancy

It could be from a magicians coin where they remove detail like you described, then hollow out another coin and stick your example into it for a two headed coin. Or they could have trimmed a cent down to use as a dime in a vending machine.

If it was on a foreign planchet you would still have struck detail on the reverse and NO raised edge on it. Lincoln is perfectly centered. I will look at it at the meeting to verify.
