MY favorite find....a WW1 10K gold ring...found in the ocean

Magyar

New member
35th Battaliion-12th division (Plymouth Division) stationed at Ft. Deven's , Mass. from August , 1918 to January , 1919.

Their commanding officer- Sen . John McCain's great -great uncle.

Men were supposed to be deployed to France..never got there; Influenza outbreak at the barracks.

This ring is definitely more valuable to me than all the gold and silver rings combined that I have found to date.

WOWIE ZOWIE..........i dont blame you on naming this one your fav. sounds like you did a bit of research as well. interesting little story and very interesting ring. wouldnt mind finding one myself..nice huntin.:clapping:

hi magyar, i believe they call 'em "finds of a lifetime" - great job. would you take another tv for it? i got one! haha, just kidding! but hey, nice find. i would hang onto it too. hh,

that's interesting , Brandy

I remember that base when I used to go to Cape Cod during the summer ...way......way....back .

I phoned the curator of what is now "Fort Deven's Museum" ..and got the information from him.

I also got the original roster book of the Battalion from E-bay..lists all the soldiers...etc. I was lucky to get this book.

Ring has no visible initials..

Wrote to a couple of Sen McCain's committee headquarters telling them my story and requesting that he might sign the roster book when he passed through Ct....never heard from any of them! :rage:

guess they were too busy for me...well, I found the ring...thought the Sen. might like to know about it...

probably history and sentiment; it's 10K...the curator at the museum did not express any interest in displaying it.

That ring is wonderful.

Hope you don't mind if I show a couple of WW I era artifacts I found.

This is a 161st FIELD ARTILLERY REGIMENT insignia.

Motto: FAIRE SANS DIRE (To Do Without Saying).

Not worth much, but I think it's interesting.

This is a WW I era hand grenade pin. Again not worth much. But I like it.

This is a potentially dangerous item. It is a artillery fuse timer for artillery rounds.
This one actually has value. They are hard to find in this model.

WARNING !!!!!!!!! IF YOU DIG SOMETHING LIKE THIS, IT MAY BE DANGEROUS !!!!!!!!!

Here is a cut-away view of one I got off the Internet.

HH,

Tabdog, those are terrific WW1 artifacts! Thanks for posting the pics.

I am intrigued by the insignia and would like to know what the metallic content is. That is a fabulous find!

also I know that the flower on the right is a "fleur-de -lis", but is that a cactus on the left?

May I ask in what state did you find this? ...or what country?

As an added note of interest, I found a 14 K 1924 religious ordination ring a few months ago with an inside inscription stamped"Quid Dicit Facite"

which from Latin translates :"what you say, I do" ..or similar to that ..Here are pics of the ring.

wow, magyar, it looks like your're cornering the market on really nice rings! most unusual. as always, i like to see stuff like that, as i'm not that close to a beach. so it's refreshing to see your great beach finds. i believe tabdog is cleaning out arkansas of it's gold too! he's done well too. have you tried rehoboth beach? lots of great finds there too. wtg, and hh,

Hi GrayGhost,

I have never heard of rehoboth beach....is that in Ct.?

I hunt along the Ct. shoreline...Long Island Sound

very nice artifacts i would somehow display them in my house. i would be afraid of the dangerous ones though.

Hay Magyar,

That ring is just fabulous. Absolutely amazing.

Here is my oldest ring. Dint know much about it.

It is 14k white gold. I forgot what the stone is.

I think the insignia is brass?

I found these items at a WW I training facility that was located in central Arkansas.
There is still a army base there but some of the original land has long been released
for development and a large park.

Here is some info on the insignia.

Distinctive Unit Insignia. Description: A Gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height consisting of a shield blazoned: Per fess Azure and Gules, in chief a giant cactus and a fleur-de-lis Or. Attached below and to the sides of the shield a Red scroll inscribed

Wow, Tabdog!! What a terrific relic that is!!

Thank you very much for the interesting informatiion...

I love history..from Ancient Egypt to the present.

I think that is a fabulous find!!

hi, magyar. rehoboth beach is in delaware, if i remember right. it's a bit south of you though. i've heard and read about some terrific finds being made there, especially after big storms. been a lot of spanish and colonial silver and gold found there over the years, some of it being found laying on the beach by passersby. i remember it distinctly from dad's old lost treasure magazines from the 60's and early 70's. hh,

Tabdog..that white gold ring is soooooooo beautiful....the stone is gorgeous...I'm not astute on the various stones, but that is a beauty!!
Congratulations on a great find!

Thanks for that information Gray Ghost

It is a little far for me to drive there, but if one of my detecting friends would be able to drive , that 's the place we'll go.

I just received my permit for park detecting in New York State ..can't wait to go with my friends..There are lots of colonials in the parks there.
