my experience with the sand shark

this is my first year of detecting. Even though i got my sand shark at the end of April 07 i never really started to use it until 9/25/07 because i was doing the easy work of dry sand detecting with my cibola. Since i did not find hardly anything of real value with my cibola in dry sand i finally started water detecting.
As i detect in ny + nj the real water detecting period is from June through the beginning of sept. yet, despite starting my salt water detecting on 9/25 i have done fairly good during this

Holy mackerel Don you are doing fantastic at the shore. Are you actually going in the surf with the pounding waves or are you searching the wet sand, or in the bay. I believe the Sand Shark is a PI machine. Doesn't all the tiny rusty metal drive you nuts, or how do you deal with it. I live in Jersey and hit the beach several times during season and most times I go home with nothing but coins, but I have found a few gold rings in the wet sand. I have a CZ -20, picks up a ladies gold ring in the wet sand at 8 inches (I buried one with a string attached for a depth test). Man, you're cleaning up, Jabbo

Fine looking success log!

Have you got pics of the trove?

I am in NJ and hunt the beaches alot, but at this time of year, I am hunting wet sand and suds. Not going into the water per se. Were all your finds with the Sand Shark in the water, or were some in the suds or wet sand ? The reason I ask is that I have PI unit , and will be using it on the NJ beaches, and if you are hunting the wet sand and suds, then it gives me hope !!

Thanks,

JC

it detects every tiny piece of rusty wire and rusty nails in the wet or dry sand and there is a lot of it. Those small pieces are hard to find in the wet pile, wastes a lot of time. So I keep the Disc. at #1, the lowest setting. Even that way it still detects large iron bolts. I lose some sensitivity in Disc. mode but it's the best way for me to go. I like the CZ-20, have the 10 inch coil, hip mount the control box and I can hunt for 6 hours. I usually go to Belmar, Bradley Beach, Point Pleasant, all 50 miles away, I live in Middlesex Boro. A guy I know lives in Toms River, hunts Seaside about every week said he finds more jewelry in the winter than the summer. I hit the beach the day after the last two Nor'easters, didn't find anything good, some corroded coins. The thing is, only 2 other detectorists were on the beach for a short while, maybe all the others know something I don't. Jabbo

yes, the shark is a pi machine + detects all metal. the way i look at it is that scooping iron is just part of the price to pay in getting gold + that whatever i scoop is another item less for the next time out.
my 4 best pickings (the 3 diamond rings + the bracelet) were in the water but by the shore. the rest of the pickings were in stomach to chest deep water. the 1/2ct diamond ring was almost given up on as it was near the shore + very deep.
my preferred way of detecting is to go from the shoreline out to chest deep water - move over a few feet + then head into the shore. i continue doing this as this way i hit all the zones. but, if a beach is particularly crowded near the shore then i will stay out in deeper water.
the picture of my pickings has it all except the last 2 rings as my camera died
i will try to post 3 pictures so you can see it all

ps - if either of you jersey people (jabbo or therover) want to get together for future hunting together send me a pm as i will be doing more hunting in jersey this year.
