My Excal II 800 is pretty lame

Recently purchased a new Excal II 800. It is very dissappointing on depth. I can only get targets that are about 6 to 7 inches deep. I was not too shure of the depth so I have been very careful to check where the target is. I hunt pretty slow and when I get a target I just remove a littles sand until I see the target. I use a ruler to see the re.al depth. I have found nothing deeper than 7 inches in wet sand at the beach. I am talking quarters so this is not very good.

Anybody else have this experience? I thought these machines were supposed to get deep. My cheapie very old Surfmaster detecter gets much deeper.

some question come to mind..........
are those 6-7" targets very weak hits, or are they strong? if strong, you could find deeper stuff if it's there.
how far can you lift the coil before losing these 6-7" targets? if you can lift it several inches, then you could find deeper things if they are there.
do you know how to use the sensitivity control? setting it too high or low will kill your depth.

The sensitivity control needs to be at the correct setting for optimal depth. Sometimes that's AUTO. For me, I never use auto, and run my sensitivity a little lower than the edge of being unstable. I feel that when my Excal is running very smooth, I get the best depth. There are times when I had it set too high and I was not finding much. I lowered it and the targets started showing up.

Hi Uptomyneck, Have you ever USED any EXCAL BEFORE, or is this your FIRST EXPERIENCE? If this is your FIRST EXPERIENCE, then you need to get CLIVE CYNICK's Book on FINDING MORE GOLD with the MINELAB EXCALIBUR/SOVEREIGN Metal Detectors. Otherwise, ART & THEROVER have given you ACCURATE ADVICE, and YOU JUST HAVE TO SPEND MORE TIME and EXPERIMENT WITH THE EXCAL!! Hope this helps, hh, Les Robinson
