My day at the sifter.

Hello there everyone. I got out on saturday to my old site to dig out the ice house.By 5:30pm. I had about 27 tons of rocks cleaned out of the inside.I was beat, but had high hopes for sundays siftin.
I started early on sunday and had about two ft. of soil sifted, then dug a test hole anouther two ft. to see if it was worth going any deeper. no signs of ever being disturbed in the past. The only finds that were in there were some teeth from a beef, and hog,and one button BACK.
So I thought i would retire for the day.<img src="http://www.findmall.com/gallery/albums/userpics/13167/eb3702.jpg" alt="" />
As i was resting back at home i couldnt stand the thought of being well prettymuchskunked so i grabbed the machine and headed right back there and hunted the front yard area again and then it was pay day. 5 more early coppers, the two half pennys were stuck together in one hole, and every time i find anouther silver its like, well you know.I think the button is anouther rev.war button, but there is soo much crud on it that you cant see any detail. The USA buttons and clipped silver were all found on the same site, but are in one general area on a small hill side. I am gunna try to get together some pics of the site and the areas that the finds came from soon to post up for ya all soon. HH and seeyallater!!!.................................Ed

Ed, that is one of the better detecting days I have seen anyone on here find in a while. Can you tell us some dates? I see one of the hlf cents is 1809. If the button is brass, I would try to dip it in "works" bathroom cleaner QUICKLY and scrub it. That junk should fall of fairly quickly. Or you can do it controlled with a q-tip just on the top. If its eaten up bad anyway I would say you have nothing to lose. Be careful though the works will eat anything up quick! Once again, awesome finds............Aaron

Very nice collection of early coppers. Know you'll be hitting that place again soon. I know the sifting is frustrating, but sometimes you just have to give it a try to satisfy your curiousity. Lookin' forward to your pics. By the way, how far back does this site date?

The site dates to arround mid 1700s, Not really sure of that. How do i date the pottery? There are no records of this site as far as i know.I havent seen any bottles here to say so.Most of the coppers are from 1800 to 1809,The silvers (dated from 1734 to 1782) and the USA buttons have been comming from a small hill side near the house foundation.
Thanx again and seeyallater!!!..................Ed

I can only get a date off of three out of five coppers(1800.1806.and 180:geek:The silvers that i have been finding there date from 1734 to 1789. I will have to try the cleaner on the button.Thanx for the kind words. HH and seeyallater!!!..............Ed

awesome ed, another clipped silver! and the early usa coppers, you're doing great!. we have a ton of early foundations up here in Md. that joe, pulltab mike and I have hunted around, but have not dug and sifted the cellarholes. of course, now there is some restrictions on hunting this particular area,so i doubt we will ever have the opportunity to sift the cellarholes.

I hope my back can at least hold out for the rest of this site, there are rocks every where's.AND i think the hard part will be fillin back in the holes.LOL
Thanx for the kind words.HH and seeyallater!!!...Ed

Just be careful and don't put the works on the coppers. it will turn them into a blank disk!!!!!!!........Aaron

Below is a link to one of the pottery ID websites that I use. Clicking on each one will provide more detailed info, including dates. Check it out, and let me know what you think. If that doesn't help, please post some pics of your pottery/stoenware, and I'll see if I can help out.
