My Compadre broke!

DetectorOCD

New member
Man, am I bummed. I just removed the screw under the control unit to take the box off of the pole so I could clean under there, and some sort of threaded insert came off and rattles around in the box now. Should I send it in? Or should I just open it up and see if I can reattach it? I just bought it too. I don't want to void the warranty

I would just remove the face plate and jiggle the nut out and and put a dab of glue on the nut and glue it back on........ and then close it back up then screw it back on ! Probably sounds easier on paper:stretcher:

Detector OCD,
Here are my thoughts after pulling the box on my Campadre to be sure I have seen the mounting; and not knowing your experience level in working on things:

There are micro-electronic circuit components on the circuit board that do not take kindly to electrostatic discharge. So if you open it up, make sure you discharge yourself first by holding the Compadre's aluminum rod and touching something grounded like the side of your refrigerator. Don't charge yourself up by dragging your feet across a carpet, sliding across synthetic seat cushions or rubbing a balloon on your hair. After discharging yourself sit on a metal or wooden chair with no seat cushion on it. Even if you are not getting sparks when discharging, it is important to discharge before you go in where you might touch the circuit card components.

It should be an easy fix if you are handy with nuts and bolts. Since you do not need to disconnect any wiring (not even the discrimination pot from the front panel) and no adjustments need to be made your warranty should be OK. If in doubt you can call and talk to the fine folks at Tesoro.

If you open it up, you should be able to see where the retaining bar belongs and slide it back where it goes without un-wiring anything. (Mine has a retaining bar and not a nut.) Carefully pull the front plate forward after taking out the two screws holding the plate. Then move the circuit card only as much as is needed to put the threaded retainer back in and get the threads started on the single screw that holds the body to the aluminum rod. Reposition the circuit card and put the front panel on with the two screws. Do not tighten the two front panel screws too tight, they only go into plastic.
Good luck and enjoy your Campadre!

the nut is still there it just moves
get it in the correct position then put the screw back in
i do this regularly with all mt umax inits as i swap them on different shafts your compadre is not broken just put the screw back in

You guys are freaking amazing. THANK YOU! I'm going to do this tomorrow night. You saved me shipping costs, and time away from detecting!

Well, I opened it up and saw that the little threaded insert had broken free from the glue. I can tilt the unit and put the screw into the pole, so that's fine for now. If I ever have to send it in to Tesoro, I'll let them do the gluing :)

Thanks!
