My Coming Out , Day 1

A couple of day I opened a thread about hiding to do metal detecting. This weekend I decided to go in a busy public park to do metal detecting and see how things were going to go. A colleague told me of this big city park where she is taking her dog walking. So I decided to go there. I never went to this place before. It is a very big park. There is a big public swimming pool, a baseball field, a soccer field, a volleyball field, a big kid playground, three tennis courts and plenty walking paths.

My first day, Saturday, I arrived in mid-morning. There were many people but the place was far from being crowded. It was a nice sunny and warm day. I spotted my first potential problem...The ground crew were there mowing the lawn, I could see mowing tractors everywhere and worker with weed eaters working the ground. I told myself "darn...I am going to get kicked out of the place as soon as they see me digging holes in the ground..."

To put all the chances on my side, I did dress clean, with beige shorts with matching shirt and clean running shoes. I started to metal detect around the spectator benches near the soccer field, as well in the adjacent dirt parking lot. To my surprise I did not get bother once by any of the ground crew. After an hour or so I notice someone approaching me and talking to me. I removed my earphones. It was a nice looking woman. She asked me if it was metal detecting I was doing? I answered in the affirmative. She asked me what exactly I was looking for. I told her I was looking for old coins. I showed her the hand full of pennies I found so far (it was a pretty slim picking so far). She ask me if I could find gold with my Ace 250. After explaining her that my machine could find big nuggets of gold and jewelry but it was not a gold prospecting machine. She told me she did get a gold panning dish once but finding no one to go with her she did not do much gold prospecting. My mind was churning as last winter I bought a Garrett Deluxe gold panning kit and did not yet had a chance to try it much. I was considering the probable implications and ramifications of asking her to explore the possibility of doing gold prospecting together.:cheekkiss: But the opportunity passed and she wished me good luck with my search. After another hour I was tired and went back home.

Later that night, I called my girlfriend (the ramifications I was talking about ... :stretcher:) As usual when I told her I only got 27 pennies out of my trip, I was met by a long silence, followed by a change of subject.. Of course I did not told her about my meeting with the nice lady....

This was day 1. I think it went very well other than the slim picking of 27 pennies.

When I first started I was the same way...really nervous about what the grounds crew would do but I figured that at worst, they would tell me not to do that anymoere. Much to my surprise, they pretty much ignore me. They go past and sometimes they will wave to me and go on their way. Once in a while, one will stop and ask if I'm having any luck (I always tell them 'not much' and then shwo them the trash in my collection bag). Personally, I object to the people who walk their dogs and leave little 'dog bombs' all over the place, but people use parks in different ways. You and me are just one way to enjoy them. Happy hunting.

I believe I've gained a little confidence within the last couple months because I joined a local Metal Detecting Club. Prior to that I always thought I was The Only person to detect around the area and felt like an outcast. Occasionally you still get people looking at you like you're crazy, but if only they knew they are standing at the end of the rainbow, and there is money and jewelry and nuggets right under their feet WHO'S CRAZY NOW!!! I recently met an older gentleman at a park (probably in his eighties), I had a hole dug about 9" down in the ground, and he introduced himself as the caretaker to the park. I thought OH NO HERE WE GO. Instead he got down on his hands and knees, and I noticed he was a treasure hunter also (he was wearing an arrowhead around his neck) I proceeded to ask him about his arrowhead and if he hunted them, and he pulled another one out of his pocket. He asked me if I found anything, and I told him a couple mercury dimes and a couple indians, and let him take a look at them. We talked a while longer, and he patted me on the back, stood up from kneeling and told me Good Luck!!! It kind of showed me that people do show interest in what I'm doing and it's not always in a negative way.

I have a response to the "I found 27 pennies" story. Your finds will improve very quickly with practice. Additionally, if you get into the habit of digging lots of pennies you will be rewarded with lots of small silver rings and maybe even a US gold coin or a big gold ring. Lots of good loot on those penny notches. Good post.
