My best find to date made today with E-Trac.

Gentlemen, today I made my best find ever at an old park that I've just begun to hunt. A 1921-D Mercury dime. Now for the bad news; I scratched the reverse side when retrieving the coin. I don't know how much it hurt the value, but without the scratch I think it would have been a 100 dollar coin or close to it. I'm a self confessed metal detecting nut that hunts 2 or 3 times a week, so I don't post all my finds; that would get old really fast; but since this is my best find to date, I thought I would show it to you. I found a total of 4 silvers today which brings my 09 total up to 87.

Good Luck to all.

Sharpshooter,

Nice find... and don't worry about the scratch... Its not a key date... and its gonna happen... we've all scratched coins... I scratched the '47 Washington Quarter I got yesterday...

Happy Hunting Sir!

Sharpshooter, I feel for you about the scratch. My best find was a 1885 Morgan silver dollars that was in almost brillant uncirculated condition that I scratched. My buddy that was with me started kiddingly calling me "Kenny the Gouger"! He ended up giving me a cheap plastic trowel that I use after using the Leshe to dig the initial hole. I'm sure that plastic trowel has kept me from scratching many more coins. Better you found it and scratched it than not finding it at all.

From Alfred Lord Tennyson's poem In Memoriam:27, 1850:

I hold it true, whate'er befall;
I feel it, when I sorrow most;
'Tis better to have found and scratched
Than never to have found at all.

The first Merc I found (this past winter) I scratched it. I was heart broken for the rest of the hunt. When I went and found it wasn't a key date and only worth $1.00 I felt a lot better. Still after several hours in the field, its hard not to get lazy digging. The scratched Merc (and a few others) serves as a good reminder in those situations either to slow down or go home.

Hey sharpshooter----Congrats on that semi-key Merc dime!!!---You're doin real well on your silver count to.---Don't worry about that scratch--she's yours all yours, most of us haven't even found a '21-D Merc.---Reminds me of the first Morgan I found--it was about 6" deep & down under a fair size tree root.--I went down & hit the root, then had to "burrow" in from the side to get it out.--During the process, I put my signature on it (scratch) but that baby was all mine.--Coin scratches happens to all of us pardner (at one time or another).---Keep up the "good diggin"!--------Del
