My Beach Continues to Surprise Me - 18k/Plat Men's Band

My gale of the past few days was a bit of a disappointment for me as I was expecting the gale out of the SW as per the forecast but it came in out of the N instead, useless for churning up the South Shore Beaches as this made them the lee shore. The winds quieted down this morning so I decided to get out for a hunt of the low tide at 1015 but I knew that the South Shore would be a waste of time, so what to do? My private beach faces north so I reluctantly decided to give it a go for the first time in months. I've pounded this beach to death over the past 20 months so I expected little loot but it was convenient and I wanted to hunt. I spent 2 hours in the water and it was decidedly cool but very worthwhile when I found a nice 18k yellow gold and platinum band at the edge of a turtle grass patch. The sand was really quiet so I had decided to work the turtle grass for a change in the hope that I had missed something there on previous hunts, it's a low percentage hunting area but it delivered big time today. I also picked up a single American quarter (also in the turtle grass) but that was to be expected as the beach has been very heavily hunted by yours truly. I'm now sipping a shot of my favorite Tequila and trying to get the circulation back into my body.
All 3 of the platinum rings I've found have come from my beach which I share with a hotel resort that starts at over $500/night. I'm thinking that in order to find platinum you've got to go where the swimmers can afford this special metal.

Good Hunting to All Pirates,

Congratulations on the nice find. I have yet to find platinum as it seems to be a very rare metal here in Maine. I'm in hopes that my new CZ-21 will find platinum for me next summer. We'll see.... Merry Christmas!

I can't wait until you get your camera back so we can see pictures of your finds. Maybe Santa will speed up the repair process.

Great logic BDA.

Best to hunt in areas of highest probability first.

Although I'm 1/2 hr from the beach I continuously do parks, schools and playgrounds.
NOT the optimal place for big Au.

Occasionally I find the coin brought in for show & tell, or grandma's ring sized to fit a child with fuzzy yarn.

I'm headed to the water next year. What wetsuit advised for 60deg saltwater?

Sometimes you just have to think outside the box if you're going to come home with the gold, rmptr. I knew how hard I had pounded the prime areas so after half an hour of silence (I run in silent threshold), I got my thinking outside the box. The seas surface temperature here is 68.1F and the air temp was 66F today. Wearing a 3 mil, farmer john, wetsuit in chest deep water for 2 hours left me frozen so I should have put the shorty with full arm protection on underneath. I'm now fully acclimatized from living in Bermuda for the past 3 years so I find this very cold now, I probably would have been fine if I was still living in Canada. If I had worn the full wetsuit, shorty plus farmer john over top I would have had 6 mil protection for my torso and 3 mil for my extremities; more than enough for temperatures down to the low 60's. Having a two part suit gives me a lot of flexibility as the sea and air temperatures vary throughout the year, too hot can be as much of a problem as too cold. I would suggest something in this vein if I was going into water as low as 60 but not much lower. Two hours was all I could take today and it still took me an hour to get the pins and needles out of my fingers. (early sign of hypothermia).

Cheers,

BDA:cool:

18K anything is nice - platinum makes it that much better!!

Keep everything you're finding and give us a composite pic when you get a camera again!

Great job, I've only found 1 platinum ring in 14yrs detecting. I now own the Infinium and reckon on getting a lot more. HH regards Nugget.:ausflag::)

BDA sounds like you need to spend more time in the grass, I know we will love the ring when you get the camera fixed. Now I know what they meant when they said, a picture is worth a thousand words. Congrats on the Platinum and Gold. HH
