My Ace250 has become a nickel maniac!

I have been hunting "detecting" since the middle of June. In that time,up til Saturday, I had found 42 nickels. Saturday and Sunday my combined total for nickels was 35. I found 11 Saturday and 24 on Sunday. The strange thing is they were showing up as quarters, bouncing between penny and dime, also bouncing between nickel and pull tab. out of all those nickels in two days only one registered as a solid nickel. On Saturday when the first nickel showed up as a quarter I couldn't believe it,that had never happened before. I thought I was mistaken, but 5 out of the 11 nickels that day rang in as quarters. The other 6 bounced between dime and penny. My depth reading was also wacky the last two days. every time the ace told me it was at 4 inches or less I could pinpoint it with my pro pointer before I popped it out. But every time my ace told me it was two inches or less I couldn't pinpoint it with the pro pointer til I dug down about 4 inches I understand that the depth reading is always a "more or less thing" Don't get me wrong I am not complaining about the depth thing or the nickel thing I just find it very interesting and curious as to what brought this on. I have enough hours on my Ace to know it pretty well and this is just out of character. I had a total of 236 coins for the two days and only 50 were Penny's. all clad coins but again I am not complaining I love the hunt!! I did find a broken piece of jewelry with 2 big diamonds. If those diamond are real....WOOHOO!! I'll have to have the "Infinium" and the "Scorpion" :detecting::twodetecting::garrett:

:usaflag:I counted 70 nickels in my finds jar. Not including the 4 War Nickels, 3 buffalo's.. and 50's which are seperate. And nickels are the most evasive for me. Started detecting around first week of April/2010

My Ace has been reading pennies as dimes a lot lately...frustrating when you are trying NOT to dig them.

Also had a first on sunday. My detector froze up....all of the icons were lit and froze...hitting buttons did nothing. So I had to pull a battery out, and just for good measure did not put it back in for 30 seconds. Has worked fine since then. Call it a momentary glitch I guess.

I also found some poison ivy. Got some on my wrist...itches like hell !!

Sorry to hear bout the poison Ivy. The freezing up thing, That sucks. have you heard of it happening to any one else? How did you know to pull a battery or was that just an Idea that popped into your head so you did it? I guess all this stuff just makes the hunt more interesting,ya just never know whats goin' to happen next.

:usaflag:Well since the detector was frozen "on"...it was the only option at that point to get it to turn "off". I was just happy that it was'nt still frozen when I put the battery back in. That would have ended our day unceremoniously..

There is a factory reset function on the Ace 250. When you push the on button, hold it in until you hear a double beep (holding it up in midair with no signals). That hopefully should clear things up.
Other than that, I dunno.

Good Luck

:usaflag:Yeah I tried that. None of the buttons were working. Taking the battery out did the trick.

mcdave my ace reads copper pennys as dimes but not the zinc ones

A nickel is the only coin my ACE consistently identifies, if I get a solid nickel and the icon doesn't bounce around that is usually what it is( or a square aluminum can tab ). All zinc pennies show up as pennies, copper pennies show up as dimes or bounce between penny and dime. Sounds like all the ACE 250s do the same thing. I have been trying not to look at the LCD screen so much and just go off the sound............Bill in NC

I guess it all depends where you are hunting. When I hunt parks and soccer fields, a steady read on nickel will
either be a nickel or a small piece of chewed up pop can or a pull tab. Its about a fifty fifty proposition for me.
