Here's how I solved the "Dangling Wire Syndrome", which is a result of the odd placement of the headphone jack on the offside rear of the control housing. For some of you, as well as me, this placement has the headphone cable always in the way, sort of dangling in front of all the proceedings while detecting. This gets pretty annoying!
What was needed was to put the cable at the rear as on the GTA/GTP/GTI series of detectors. The pics say a lot, so I'll let them do most of the talking, with a few comments added (you didnt think I could be quiet for long, did you? ).
Here's the "end result", as it were. It's a 3/4" Nomex fitting with a PVC pipe coupling and cap attached, all clamped onto the end of the "S" rod. This neccessitated moving the arm cuff to the forward position. You'll also see that I had to shave off some of the cap to allow the 1/4' stereo jack to fit.
Here's the other end, where the cable connects. One of the things I wanted was to do this mod external, using existing connections - so as not to open the case and perhaps void the warranty. Besides, it's easily removed with one cut, using a wire clippers.
Here's the cable about to be soldered to the 1/4" jack in the end cap. I did'nt have a 3 conductor cable handy, so I just took some 22ga wire and twisted it into a braided cable, by chucking the wires in a hand drill and crankning away! It's an old electricians trick.
Here's the 1/4" jack installed in the end cap.
Here's the connector end, just prior to soldering and sealing. I used a grommet at the entry hole and filled the connector with sealant prior to screwing it all together.
This is just one way to do this mod - I'm know there are others. I merely used what I had available, with the caveat that it had to be semi-permanent, not some taped up, jury-cobbled affair.
I had to move the arm cup to the forward postition to do all this, which may present a balance problem for me, as I have fairly long arms. But, no worry. If it is a problem, I have a "Plan B"!
