My 7 year old and I are new to this great hobby

My son and I recently purchased an Ace 150 and Ace 350 respectively. I thought it would allow us to spend somewhere great time together hunting for anything we could find. His first legitimate hunt the other day produced some trash but we actually found three coins (pennies) buried between 3-6". We are in the desert where digging can be a chore and I want him to have good experiences the first few times hunting. Any suggestions where I should take him just so he can learn? He and I are getting hooked on this. I appreciate any feedback.

Get him detecting around tot lots. there are good possabilties to find coins and the digging is real easy.
Mick Evans.

Picnic area's and set up that detector "easy".
Not falsing because too high sens setting, Disc fairly high, even loosing the pulltabs.
Check to make sure it still picks up most of the modern clad coins.

That's how I rig a detector for a newbie coming along.
Having a good time out is all that counts, no need to dig lot's of trash when starting out.

Yeah, tot lots (playgrounds) are always good. You'd be surprised at some of the goodies that you can find there. Heck, just do some diggin' in your own yard, if you're just starting out. Maybe ask some of the neighbors if you can metal detect in their yards.
If you're diggin' in the desert, you're definitely gonna need a rock pick for diggin'. Garrett has a fairly decent digger for that, but Keene and others make better ones. KellyCo sells such items.
Have fun! That sounds like some really great quality time.:twodetecting: Happy Hunting!:)

Another thing you could do is when he's at school go plant (seed ) some coins
in some good location for a hunt soccer field ,sports field etc and take him there
to detect, just make sure you leave no evidence.
You could hunt with him close to that location and enjoy his finds !

Yeah! He will certainly develope an observational and analytical eye pertaining to why and where a particular item is lost...You are doing a GREAT service to him to pay attention to surroundings...metal detectors really teach that skill fast!:clapping:

Your son will remember this time spent with dad for the rest of his life. The best times in life are spent with your children.
You have been given many good ideas. One more good idea is get various coins, throw them in the back yard and don't
Tell him. Then detect your yard. He will think he is in metal detector heaven. Have a good time.

Quality time with your son in a great hobby is priceless. Parks, tot lots, schools are fine. You might want to put in a test plot and let him scan it from time to time. Different coins and different depths will help him hone his skills. Throw in a nail or pop top and mark everything where you know what's what. Good luck and happy hunting to both of you.

Welcome to the hobby and welcome to the forum.
Did your Ace350 come with a concentric coil or a dd.
I'm not sure what the 150 comes with but I purchased the
Ace 350 sports package and that came with two dd coils
I actually like the smaller doubled coil better than the larger.
The smaller is a 5x8 and the bigger is 9x11 I believe. I spent
about two weeks searching my own yard. I pulled about 300
nails from the ground but things got better and I actually found
a gold ring my wife had lost six years prior. If you know of a campsite
that has a game room with a tot lot or a rec field next to it or a concession
stand where change is readily used you'll find a lot of clad. You may
want to find your son a rugged yet flexible pair of gloves because your going to
run into a bunch of glass in the ground in public areas. Wish you the best HH and God Bless! George
