My 2nd silver dollar

steelheadfever

New member
I have been exploring some new areas the last couple of days. Yesterday I recovered some clad along with some odds and ends and this morning was about the same and I found a silver charm bracelet with a Texas Armadillo charm. It was hot and the mosquitoes were vicious even though I had lots of skeeter dope on, so I decided to bag it for the day. On my way home I saw construction near an old railroad depot in town. They were skimming a lot of dirt off the surface for what ever reason. I have permission to hunt this area so I decided to give it a try and see what turned up. It was easy digging and all you had to do was move the dirt with your foot. In one small area I recovered 3 Indian head pennies,a mercury dime, a V nickle and much to my surprise my 2nd silver dollar ever,a 1896 Morgan in great shape. If anyone had seen me when I found it they would have thought the heat had gone to my head. Silver days like this only come once in awhile for me so I am very grateful for the coins. I talked with a store owner before leaving and he told me that someone else had detected it yesterday and he to had recovered a silver dollar and two barber halves. HH Dennis in Idaho

:yikes: Boy oh boy, you've found the mother load. What an eye opener when I saw the pictures. How could you sit still long enough to type? I hope to goodness you'll be able to go back there ASAP. Those silver coins and bracelet are the cat's meow. Love those coins!!!!!
Thanks a bunch for sharing. :clapping::clapping::clapping: Great detecting and BIG congrats to you.

OK, now I've stopped drooling and going get a towel to clean the keyboard.

I have been detecting for a lot of years. I have hunting partners who have dug silver dollars, but not me, and then this year I find two. I hope I can find more. As far as the V nickels goes this is only my second. HH Dennis in Idaho

Dennis,

Very nice! The silver dollar is a beauty. The V nickel and charm bracelet are great pickups as well. As others before me have said, don't let this place cool off. Work it until there is nothing left to find. Then go back and hit it again! I have found an Eisenhower Dollar but it pales in comparison to the "real thing".

I haven't popped two Morgans in a year since 1999, and it was several years between then and the last time before that.

They just aren't out there like they used to be in those "good ol' days" of detecting for those of us who got an early start in the hobby. Some of the last "good years" were in the early-to-mid 1980's for those who were the first to put in a lot of time working the ski slopes, etc. Back then I had a friend who got 18 in one years hunting ski slopes in Utah. I didn't keep close track of my finds when I got into the sport over 42 years ago but the best I think I might have done is 20-22 silver dollars in a year from old park and school lawns, ghost towns and sledding hills close to home.

In your case, it sounds like you've lucked upon a good spot! :) Don't be misled to think that those big-sized dollar coins give off a whopping large area of response because they don't. Bigger than a dine, yes, but not much bigger than a quarter or half, and they can be easily missed by the careless searcher ... as you found out. :wiggle:

Hunt the site to death, and I hope you can get some cooler and more comfortable weather to hunt it. I almost made a run back to Utah this week and, if I would have I might have chanced across it over the weekend.

May you be further rewarded, and perhaps some more renovation sites will open up for you soon.

Thanks Monte, I went back today and I was really disappointed as to how much soil had been removed since yesterday, but I talked with the foreman and he told me where they are taking all the soil. I went there today and saw that there is about 15 to 20 piles for me to dig through. When these windows of opportunity open it does not take very long before they close. I feel really lucky that I spotted this sight before it was to late to hunt it. HH Dennis in Idaho

great find!..people had 'em!..but they are a b****d to find probably because they were always feeling for them in their pockets!
