My 2006 treasure

HawaiiTreasure

New member
I have been hunting for about 8 months using a Garrett Sea Hunter II. I found all of these in the water. This is a collection of most of the keepers. After my first year I am starting to wonder.. exactly how long does it take to find the expensive diamond ring? I found 63 rings in 2006 and not one precious stone. Not much gold either (13) but that was because I had my setting wrong. A fact I learned about on this forum. Once I changed the setting gold started jumping into the basket, but no diamond ring. I did find 14 diamond studs (probably all cz). I found 12 more rings in Jan (not pictured) and 4 so far this month, but still no diamond ring.I am approaching my 100th ring, is this the norm?

You hunt mostly where only locals go and most of them have the Hawaiian jewelry with the CZ in them. You need to go to Waikiki, even though there is more hunter that hunt there, thats where the tourist are dropping the good stuff, yesterday I found a ladies rolex there. You have to ask yourself do you want quantity or quality.

I meet you on the beach once and I have the same machine as you and I have been finding the diamonds.

It is only a matter of time and finding the gold rings. I gather you are in Hawaii. This is a spot known for fine jewelry losses, lots of vacationers with money. I am pretty amazed that not one of those have diamonds or that one of those rings is not platinum...but the law of averages says things will turn around. It's like flipping a coin. Are you hunting beaches frequented by lots of vacationers? You didn't say how big a diamond you were looking for. I have quite a few gold rings with itty bitty diamonds. If these count then you are definitely due. It very well could be in the next scoop of sand. :detecting: HH.

Your comment is exactly right. I have been in it for the quantity. I might find a lot of cool stuff in a day but if I don't get a ring I consider myself skunked and if I don't find 3 rings in a day I think of it as a slow day. I have been pulling 2 to 4 rings a day out of my spot, but they are not always quality rings. The other reason I am hunting this spot is because it is easier. Protected by the reef, there are no waves and the bottom is 90% soft sand. The waves at Waikiki can be difficult because I like to hunt in chest high water. I guess if I want the really good stuff I need to work a little harder. Maybe I'll see you in Waikiki sometime. Thanks for the imput.

I would be happy with any diamond but I am hoping for that one ring that could pay off the machine. Of course I would keep it in my collection with the rest of my found treasures, but it would be nice to say my hunting is free. 30 gold sounds like a good target. I am half way there. I'll let you know WHEN if happens.

I also use a Sea Hunter, but I have not had the success that you have. Are a lot of your finds deep? I haven't done any depth tests on my unit. Also, have you used the larger coil? I would be very interested in your feedback since your obviously making good finds.

I'm not surprised, the Mark II is a great unit. Have owned 3 and used them exclusively for my 1st 2 seasons. Excellent unit and finds Hawaii!

...not on the Sea Hunter, but on your watch. "Time." You re definitely in the right place. Just be persistent and put in the time. <><

I'm still waiting for my first "diamond" as well. When you say diamond I can only assume that you mean a solitaire. That's the first thing that comes to my mind. I've been detecting for only a little over 5 years now and just found my first rings with stones and diamonds in them. I have no doubts that a honker will eventually wind up in my scoop. We just have to look at the big picture, like with some of the suggestions below and go where the odds are most in our favor. Keep swinging.

Doc

I hate to burst your bubble... but, we've been detecting for 35 years, and my BIGGEST diamond is a 1/2 carat; at least my husband has a 3/4 carat! I'M still waiting for "THE BIG ONE", and we go to Hawaii every year!

The rich husband had the beach in front of the resort closed down and brought in equipment to sift the beach, looking for that ring. He never did find it and either did I on my recent trip there. It's probably still out there. (appraised value $100k)
