My 1st "V" Nickel

Overvoltage

New member
Every day after work, weather permitting, I try to hunt for an hour to wind down before I go home. I don't usually find much more than a couple of dollars in clad. Today I was finding a lot of pull tabs that were cut in half and ringing in at 12-12 through 12-14. Good strong signals and they fooled me every time thinking they were nickels. I was almost starting to ignore the nickel signal when this one hit. It was different in it registered 8-9 inches deep. Not normal for pull tabs so I dug it. WOW was I surprised at what popped up out of the hole. Good Day:thumbup:

Way to go Over!

Great find! I know what you mean about unwinding from work...I try to get 1-2hrs of swing time in daily, even if it's only a handful of clad!

Congrats. on your first V. It does look in amazingly good shape. If you want to get it to shine again, let it sit in pure lemon juice for a day or so and then gently rub it with very very fine steel wool. Mine was really dark and this process shined it up like new.

Nice one. It is in really good shape. Usually over this way they pop out in rough shape. Whatever you do, don't take a dremel to yours like I did the 1889 V Nickel I just recently found. Mine went from a VF 30-35 to a G4 because of that. It really knocked the value out of it. Be cautious of the method you use to clean it. I still have not found a full proof method.

Nice V!

I hate them pesky chopped pull tabs. They fool me every time.

The two V's and the only Buff I have ever found come out rust red.
Seems like the iron minerals in our ground like to stick to them.

I end up rubbing them with some Amway chrome polish. It gets rid of the red, but leaves the black tarnish patina in the lower areas giving it that old look.
The picture of the cleaned V doesn't show the patina as well, due to the light I had aimed at it to get my phone to take a focused picture. But you get the idea. :drinking:

I am afraid to clean it. Was thinking I may leave it like it is.

Yours looks to be in pretty decent shape as is... I don't know how much better it can be expected to get...

Keep digging those low tones and the next one might be a funny yellow one (gold)!! Nice find Over:clapping:

Wow nice V congrats on your first!! I got my first year before last, found 3 last year and 1o far this year on my last hunt. The first 4 were all post 1900, this last one is thin and very worn and I suspect its 1800's but sadly I don't think I'm going to be able to see a date, but again congrats on your V nickel!! I have found in this hobby when you find one of something then you begin to find more?? It happened with me with Merc dimes, Indian head cents V nickels, Barber coins and even get this, Italian dimes, yes here in East Tennesse, I've found 3 of them all at different sites! So get ready for more V's!!!

Thanks all and HH

Nice find!! It's in decent shape too. The few I have found have all been rough.

That was a nice coin before mother nature got at it the beads are still on the rim of the coin . But once it starts pitting there not much you can do . All in all nice pull some day's that's a great coin instead of clad . sube
