My 1st Day with my new Explorer SE - Questions

Longshot

New member
Hi,

I have not detected in about 6 years. My last detector was a Sovereign and I was very happy with it. I have been detecting on and off for about 35 years. I sold it off because of other interests at that time. I just bought a Explorer SE from Kellyco and went to a spot I and a buddie detected dozens of times in the past. I wanted to see if there was any silver left. I detected a small hill were we had found dozens and dozens of Mercury and Rosie's in the past. I remember no more silver to be found was our last comment.

Today I found 4 wheat's, 4 mercury dimes (1934,38,39,39) all in that small beat up hill (200'x200') All about 4-7" deep.
I was impressed how the auto sensitivity worked, keeping the machine at peak performance.

I used the factory defaults except I lowered the threshold to volume level 10 and set the recovery to DEEP.

My question is what does the Iron Mask do for me ? Should I be using it at all for coin shooting? Also when noise cancelling can you eliminate that series of tones that last about 30 seconds while it's balancing ?

Sorry if it's a stupid question. Any help would be welcomed.

2nd question, no. Iron mask is preset to -6(that's on the XS,11), I don't know the number for the SE. As you get more time in on it, just access the iron mask setting and drop it down to a lower level so that it will allow more signals to come thru. I wouldn't recommend the deep setting off the bat but if you doing ok with it then that is alright. The fast setting may help get some good signals in more trashy areas. Hey, sounds like you are off to a good start too.

Thanks Steven,

I will try the Iron mask. I usually am always in the woods / old cellar hole foundation sites or old picnic / dance grounds away from the open. Most are free of trash but I will keep the fast setting in mind in a couple of places I go to. There is a lot of surface junk there. The place I found the coins yesterday was a Boy Scout Camp from 1910 through 1956 and is now the back area / grounds of a Church.
