[attachment 43433 DSCF0001.JPG]I found this button at an old homestead that dates back before the civil war.I did some research it and it seems to have been manufactured between 1840 and 1860's. The backmark has "Canfield Bro & Co. Baltimore". It appears to have been stepped on as it is quite flat. It was found in the old garden and I'm thinking that possibly a horse did the damage.
I also found this trigger guard that I don't know anything about.
It has "R R" stamped underneath of the plate but no other markings.
I have been looking at everyones posts and finds and thought you might like to see these finds. Hopefully someday I may find some nice buttons like I have seen in these posts.
HH everyone!!!

Congratulations on the CW period Virginia button from Baltimore, MD dealer. The second piece looks like a British Enfield type Trigger guard used during the CW by both sides. Good job and HH.

Thanks for the response!!
I've only been at this for about 6 months and have much to learn,
but I sure do enjoy it.
Thanks for the info on the trigger guard too.

Nice button, it is a Virginia button. I have been relic huning for 25 years, and just found my first Va. button last week, good job.

They sure don't come by often. I have been back a few times, but have not found anymore yet.
Hopefully there is another one in better shape hiding yet to be found.
What kind of shape is yours in?

Here is a picture of one I found in Suffolk, Va. I think it's the same kind.
