My 10X5 Coiltek Coil Will Be Here Friday!

Active member
I am anxious to try it out as my 11" is at Minelab service. But it might be a few days till I can use it as i am suffering mightily from the worst allergy reaction I have had in years. Ragweed and molds are the culprits.

Yikes! I hope you feel better soon Tony!

Thanks Gary I hope for a hard freeze soon followed by a long and beautiful Indian summer.

Whooo I hate allergys Feel better soon. We are going to need a real report about that coil from a guy we know.

I think any of us greatly value your opinion... Have you got your target markers ready to deploy?

I got it today and put it on took it out for a spin in my backyard. Dug a few targets they all were junk but I knew the were before I dug it. One target was a aluminum tag that was at 6" and I got a nice clear signal. That was all I did since I was still hacking and sneezing right along, the90 degree day was not fun either. Monday is supposed to be nice and cooler so I hope to get out for a better test.

I am looking forward to the review.
I just shipped my 11" coil out today. What problems were you having with it?

The Coil Not Connected message along with erratic TID. Called and e-maled and they got back within an hour! Sent it in and now waiting.

Randy everyone knows what a great detectorist you are, they figure if a dub like me can make some good finds then it must be a great coil!

Took the Coil out to a park near me that has an old house on it. Hunting around the house has always been a challenge due to iron and trash are quite prevalent. Now in the past there have been Indians, Large Cents, both big and small silvers, many relics and trash....lots of trash dug here. This site has been hunted by many and it has gotten to the point that it is very difficult to pull any coin from it. Even more modern coins have been sucked up by the clad hunters. I have found personally over 100 wheats. I went out for about an hour and a half, still fighting allergies/cold. At about 4 inches I got a very small blip of a high tone between large iron grunts, slowing down the swing I was able to tell the blip repeated a 12-39 signal and I dug a wheat cent as my target. I know I have been over this area dozens of times, as have many others. Now at 4" depth was not masking the signal but only the iron. I was impressed by the signal and confident when I dug it the likely target was a wheat. A great find....no but a confidence builder in this coil. I also dug a part of a pocket watch in the same area.

Just another better than average comment on this forum. Randy I can't wait to hear what your opinion is on this coil.

Thank you Bell- Two for the post. I hunt a small one room school house that is about 150 X 300 Sq. feet. I must have hunted this property at least 50 times. I hunted it with the 11" coil on my Safari and the 11" on my CTX 3030 and my 6" coil on the CTX. My brother has hunted it with his AT Pro. Every time that I hunt this small piece of land I find something. I have found a large cent, some silver and a few Indian heads when I first started to hunt this property. After time went by I was only finding clad. Then every once in a while something good would come up again. The point I am trying to make is it is very hard to judge a coil in this manor. No matter how many times you hunt a place and no matter what coil you have on, it is hit or miss. There are to many variables involved. I hear people saying they don't believe in test gardens. Then how else can you get an honest result on different coils? I know that people who work for a company is going to say that their coil is the best, we all know that. So what is the best way to find out what is the best coil? BUY THEM ALL like I do. I just can't get myself to buy this one.

Jim

As I mentioned a couple weeks back, the reasons I wanted to get one were two-fold.....a smooth bottom and a larger footprint than the 6-inch Minelab coil. Both of those "reasons" would benefit me in many of the places I like to hunt. (rough terrain, crop stubble and plowed fields).

As to how it hunts....so far, so good. Although it is extremely stable, it is a bit more sensitive than my Minelab coils. I say that because where I typically use Auto +3 on the Minelab coils, I have to back it down to Auto +2 with this coil to minimize chattering. And in wetter soil where I can typically get away with Auto +2, this one had to be backed down to Auto or Auto +1. The depth of detection is a bit more than the 6-inch Minelab coil in that I retrieved targets that were not detected with the 6-inch. As expected, the "left to right" separation characteristics are similar to the other DD coils. This elliptical coil provides quite accurate TID for US coins. The only "con" I've found thus far is one I also have with the Minelab Stock coil. As such, it could well be in the filtration algorithms of the CTX and not the coil itself. Anyway, I've dug several dozen deeply buried, bent, iron nails the past week or so that gave me the solid "dig me" signal from one direction. No matter how many times I circled the target, it always gave me that "dig me" response when swept in a certain direction. Over the years, I've dug enough iron trash to usually feel confident walking past most of those squeakers. But on the other hand, I've found enough old silver coins "on edge" at these sites that I didn't want to pass any of them up. So far, all of these have been those pesky bent nails. Oddly enough, just as find when I dig one of these using the stock coil, the old bent nail is found at the back-left edge of the hole. (about the 7:30 position) With the 6-inch, I can usually tell the difference by comparing the exact target location in Pinpoint, with the exact location in detect mode. But the size of the detection field makes it a bit more difficult with this coil, just as it does with the stock coil. As I said, if it weren't for the fact I've dug quite a few coins on edge in these sites, I'd probably passed up the majority of these "one-way" signals. But they looked enough like old dimes that I wasn't taking any chances. I need to spend more time with the tip of the coil "tracing" the target, to see if I can get a better grip on the location differences.

With a hard frost the night before last, it won't be long until harvest is underway. When the crops are out of the fields, I can take this coil out to the places I really enjoy detecting! At that time, I'll let you know how it performs for me in those environments. But as I said....so far, so good! JMHO HH Randy

Digger, I agree with your reasoning. I was just swinging this morning in stubble, bush hogged plot and was getting hung up by the open web, not allowing a steady even sweep. I think Im sold too. Who is carrying them now ?
Thanks , please report early findings.

If anything Diggers mini review has lessened any desire I may have had for the coil... So far it sounds like in his honest opinion it offers little (any?)separation improvements over stock coils. I guess there is a chance he may come back and say "wow it's awesome!" but......
As far as it being helpful in stubble fields,I could put together a lot cheaper solutions ( thinking a fifteen dollar spare coil cover and a piece of plastic cut to the same size and some glue / or possibly velco) than a 369 dollar coil. Yes,I am sure you can get it for a bit less than that if you shop around...

I agree!-----After reading Randys honest review on the 5 X 10, I went out and bought the 6" coil.------I don't think I am going to regret my decision--not for what I want/need it for anyway.

But when it comes time to hunt the places I particularly like to hunt, I am confident it will be a worthwhile investment for me. It does what I expected it to do in that the smooth bottom won't get hung up on field stubble. And the larger field of detection (compared to the 6-inch) will cover more turf with each sweep. The separation is no different than other DD coils, left to right. But that is to be expected of the DD design. I can't explain the higher level of Sensitivity or how it might be of benefit. But if this coil continues to give me an inch or more additional depth, all the better. The nails might be a problem until I figure out how to isolate them. But again, you can draw your own conclusions as to whether it would be worth the investment to you. It is not my intent to promote any detector or accessory with my posts. I simply call it as I see it, in regard to how specific gear works for me, in the places I like to detect. Nothing more...nothing less. Personally, I see a use for it in places people congregated in generations past, (that are now farm fields) simply because it will make it "easier" to hunt those types of places where I've made my best finds over the past 40+ years. If I didn't enjoy detecting in those types of places, I could be content using the stock and 6-inch coils. I have to admit, those two are a tough combination to beat for parks and yards. HH Randy
