MXT300 and Nicles

I know that this has been asked and answered many times because I have read all the posts way back on this thread and on the internet. But I need further clarification.

The last time I was out hunting I was using the 5.3 eclipse, preset 9 and just shy of the 2nd preset on discrimination on a MXT300.

Clarification needed is in regards to nickles. Everything that I have read states that they should come in between VDI 18-20. This is correct isn't it? The reason that I am asking is because I had a couple of VDI's that came in at those numbers that were repeatable from multiple directions and had very solid confidence blocks. Guess what they were when I dug them? Pull tabs...

I rechecked the target area and the "target" was no longer there. So the "target" was not being masked by the pull tab.

I know that all that displayed information is just a "suggestion" or "possibility" of what the target is. But what is the best displayed information combination that has the best chance of showing a nickle?

Thanks for revisiting a dead horse so to speak...

Nickel and tabs will sometimes ID the same number. Could be that the tabs are slightly bent or damaged or the composition
of the tab may be altered being in the ground for some time.
I find that some can slaw (lawn mowered drink can) will come up as nickel range.
I've even had nickel ID int he low nineties.
So that means dig everthing that will ID in those ranges.
Lots of rings are missed If you pass those numbers.

I've dug nickels from 14 to 22 with my MXT. 22 and higher more often turns out to be a tab of one style or other.

Yes, the VDI of nickels is basically around 18. Give or take a couple points. Pull-tabs are around there also......same as gold rings. The more gold the higher the VDI number. I use the coin/jewelry mode when hunting sports fields, etc. You're doing it right. When I'm deep old coin hunting, I use relic mode. Sounds like you're on your way and don't get discouraged when you get those stinkin' pull-tabs. If you dig those, you'll be finding nickels and possibly gold rings. After a while, you'll be able to hear the different sounds that the MXT makes. It's a very slight difference in sound, but it's there. Always dig!! That's my rule of thumb. HH and good luck hunting, Nancy
