MXT vs IDX Pro with mods for coin shooting - how do they compare?

If I were to use the stock 9.5 coils on both units, which may be better?

I see some use the relic mode on the MXT for coins, others use the coin/jelery mode.

I guess I will possibly find out tomorrow first hand as the MXT is supposed to arrive then BUT I want to hit the ground up and running armed with the BEST info available.

It seems to me the IDX with mods will be difficult to beat.

thanks
Tony

I have them both but have not modded my IDX (yet). The IDX is much quicker responding so it is best for trashy sites and rapid searches of an area. The MXT has the best target ID and also should be deeper in cleaner ground.

IDX Pro: a bit faster recovery, less expensive. MXT: better depth, beter target ID, easier (automatic) ground balancing, more sensitive to really small targets, FAR better nugget hunter, far more versatile detector. More expensive. Hope this helps; HH jim

in many applications the MXT might prove to be a little more responsive to smaller, low-conductive targets such as gold nuggets. I will also state that the MXT does provide a dual-tone audio option in the Relic mode, and there is a little more visual TID with it.

But having fessed up to that credit to the MXT let me also state that I have owned four of them and preferred/prefer my much quieter-operating modified IDX Pro. I have better control of the GB setting, even though the MXT can track quickly (I usually preferred it locked anyway), and I can set a nice, smooth, quiet-sounding audio threshold where as the MXT is usually sputtery, raspy noisy.

The IDX Pro works much quieter in dense iron infested sites and ... for me ... is just a better all-around performer. It is less annoying and that means it can be more pleasant or fun to hunt with, and if this hobby isn't 'fun' then you're missing out.

Does the MXT work? Certainly. Is one better than they other? Certainly depending upon what a detectorist's goals are, their patience level, and how comfortable they are with the detector they have in hand. With my modified IDX Pro, Shadow X5, X-Terra 50 and XLT I am quite happy not adding an MXT back into by arsenal.

As for the 950 coil, I keep one mounted to a spare lower rod in case I need it for wide-open sites but I generally use an 8" coil or smaller in trashier areas. If they quiet down an MXT with a revised model I'd still prefer the 8" DD EXcelerator or 4

All they needed to do was add factory adjustment for GB and Threshold. Maybe a little tinkering with the visual TID, but they Classic III and IDX Pro are perfect platforms for such modifications (revisions).
