Three things influence the answer to your question: the size of the gold sought, soil conditions, and size/type of searchcoil used on the MXT. The higher operating frequency of the GMT makes it SLIGHTLY more sensitive than the MXT when it comes to finding REALLY small bits of gold. But not by much. My evaluation of the MXT and the GMT in the goldfields of the Mojave Desert is that the GMT can find flakes of gold as small as 1/10th grain, whereas the MXT can find them as small as 1/4th grain. As can be seen, this issue of operating frequency is NOT as big as issue as some believe and/or promote. When it comes to nuggets under 5 grains in size, the GMT has a slight edge over the MXT in terms of smaller nuggets, as well as and depth potential on those smaller nuggets. However, for nuggets 5 grains and larger, there is not noticable difference in performance between the MXT and the GMT. Since professional nugget hunters consider nuggets UNDER 5 grains to constitute our "bread and butter" nuggets (the gold we sell to make a living) then, yes, MOST (but not all) pros would opt for the GMT over the MXT. HOWEVER, in areas of really "bad" soil, the lower operating frequency of the MXT helps to handle bad ground better then teh GMT. Since your nickname "AZdigger" suggests you live in AZ, then LIKELY the MXT MAY prove the detector of choice for you.
