Your vdi #'s should be the same in both reliuc and coin mode. I can't actually say I have watched which vdi's get disced out at what settings but try this. Lay a nickel, zinc penny (1985 and later) a copper penny (1984 and earlier) on the ground, sweep each coin and get thier vdi. Then start cranking up the disc til you disc out all the coins, thus you have your solution. Disc is good in places but do keep in mind the more disc you use the more goodies you may loose. Using the stock coil I ran gain of 9 disc on 3 coin mode threshold at 9oclock and dug all repeatable beeps, still got some trash but didn't leave much behind, Thats what I like about relic mode trigger in center, set the disc where you want , anything under the setting is low toned all else is high toned, nothing is actually disced out it only has a different tone, I guess kinda like a sound discrimination, which lets you check out all the beeps, high or low and check that vdi for a bouncing 18-20 reading that could be an old buff. nickel or a nice wedding band. Thing about coin mode when you disc it out thats just it, it is disced out. Relic mode still lets you hear it.
Hope this may help.

1982 was the "Year of the Zinc" and they made both copper pennies and zinc pennies that year. Thus, 1983 and newer are zinc cents, and 1981 and older are copper cents.
However, keep in mind that some of the "war time" (WW-II) pennies were steel or bronze. Those coins will read differently, as will the Indian Head cents and many/most 'Weatback" cents from 1909 thru about the mid-1029s. Indian Heads and early 'Wheaties" tend to fall in the modern zinc cent range.

...When using relic mode with the trigger in the Center position. Those low tones may not be disc'd out, they may be deep and unable to register in the high tone audio DISC mode.
Remember that relic mode in center position is BOTH all-metal mode and DISC mode operating together. Don't assume a low tone is below your discrimination setting. Especially if there is a "quarter block" display indicator that signifies the MXT has no clue what the target is made of, and the depth is rather deep. In this situation the all-metal mode portion of the MXT may be detecting the target alone.
Of course this applies more to higher mineralized soil areas where DISC mode may have trouble obtaining good depth.
Just one more thing to think about, and experiment with under different conditions.

Understand that if you raise your discrimination level, you cut down on your depth and increase your target masking. Not wise to do, even if you were looking strictly for silver coins.
