Mxt threshold sound?

New member
I recently bought a used mxt.I was told there is nothing wrong with it.I dont think thats the case.Having owned many other machines including a whites eagle sepctrum-I should know a smooth thershold sound.I can run about 7 on the sensativity before I get a crackling/static thershold. It would be impossible to hear any deep targets with out this smooth thershold sound that this machine does not have??

I think it may be the coil? I just touch the wire near the plug and it sounds off?

But someone has monky'ed with the earplug jack? Put a big metal lockwasher on it under the nut for the earplug jack.Could this metal washer be grounding out the earphone jack on the case?

I am going to purchase another coil hoping this is the problem.

Maybe there is no problem and the mxt has a staticy wierd irratic thershold sound???

Any advice be great, theres not much detecting left up here and the ground be frozen before whites cold service my machine?

The MXT does run noisier than a lot of other machines. As you know how noisy and why can be affected by several factors including improper GB'ing. Since you apparently have enough experience to realize and deal with this, and because the machine has obviously been worked on, I would suspect that there IS a problem. I think you're already on the right track. If a coil change doesn't clear it up, it would appear the problem would be with your machine. JMHO. There's plenty of people here more expert on this matter than me....they may be able to shed more light on this issue. Good luck.

rockpup1,
The turn around time from Whites is amazingly fast. A lot of times only a week or two.
The cost of a new coil could be more than any repairs that Whites might charge and the coil may not be bad.
I had a bad coil on a 6000 Di Pro and sent it in and they replaced it at no charge and I had it back in less than 2 weeks.
The same with another Whites machine that smoked from the battery compartment, less than $100 to fix and less than 2 weeks turn around.
The ear phone jack works its way loose on alot of the MXTs. Someone must have added the lock ring to stop that. I snug mine up about once a week.
If you're not willing to send your machine in now and it will run smooth at 7, maybe run it that way until the ground freezes and send it in then.
Whites has a great reputation for their service dept. and fair charges.
I can't say enough about Whites service, I think they are the best out there.
I love my MXT and I'm sure you will yours too when you get the bugs worked out.

I want to get a few differant coils for the mxt anyway so i think I will try that first before i send it away for repairs.I can get it to work but I know its not working like it should.
I want a small coil for hunting nuggets anyway-just cant decide between a 5" or 6" excelarator coil.

While we are on the subject of threshold sound, does anyone know why the threshold sounds scratchy in the relic mode with the trigger forward ? This is normal on the MXT, they all do it.

In the primary mode (trigger centered) the sound is much smoother. The only thing that I can think off that may cause the difference is a change in the sensitivity level, but that is just a guess.

Other folks have questioned this but we can't seem to get a good explanation for the difference in the threshold.

Three things I've noticed that cause my MXT threshold to be noisy are - lack of ground balancing, electrical interference and trying to run too much sensitivity for the spot. That said, for comparison's sake, I can usually run my sensitivity into the + zone to at least 1 and often more in the areas I usually hunt.

The relic mode with trigger in the center has a slow SAT speed that makes the threshold smoother while the trigger forward and coin jewelry mode has a fast SAT speed so it is normal for the threshold to be jittery in the others but it don't affect the performance.
The SAT speed can only be adjusted in the prospecting mode in the other 2 modes the sat knob controls the discrimination.

Hmm maybe my machine is normal.I haven't really tried it in dry grass, been kinda wet for some time here.It runs real smooth(smoother than other modes) in relic mode-trigger center.

Took the day off, once it warms up here going to give it a try in a few places,

Have to find a place with low emf so I can see what the heck is wrong with my Infinite detector-just had it repaired-used it a few times-short in my big coil again.....

I have a old compass relic mag that does not like emf-I shall bring it to make sure I am in a emf free spot.

I also use grey ghost headphones I really notice a difference with different headphones.I have 4 sets all with different ohms-maybe one set will sound better, most likely grey ghost LoL.

If that's the only thing you see wrong is smooth threshold in relic trigger center and it's jittery in the others then yes it's normal.
I had this problem when I first got mine and was told by most everyone I should have a smooth threshold no matter what mode or trigger position and this was just plain wrong it's just the nature of the mxt it's not just a simple little machine with an added threshold there's power under the mxt's hood. lol

I always suggest to anyone that has an mxt and don't quiet undestand it to buy the book the mxt edge by Jeff Foster it explains about the modes and also about the jitters and much, much more well worth the money it's a shame whites don't include this book with every mxt purchase much more in depth than the manual that comes with it.
The book can be found at a lot of the whites dealers or you can google search and get online if you not near one.

Took out the mxt for a few hours, started to rain.....I know theres a problem with the coil wire now.Im pretty sure thats were the extra static sound is coming from.Must be affecting the threshold sound.
As long as I leave it in the postion I have it in now its ok.Thats where my extra chatter and falsing out was coming from my wire slightly moving.I decided to get 6" excelarator coil form Kellyco-there all on sale $106 is cheap(may cost a little more for me in canada).

I can get it to run and a little work from white's and It should be tip/top again.

The DD coil should be a little more stable. Also offer way better seperation in the trashy parks i hunt.I have a few hot spots that are far from cleaned out just need a small coil for trash.
Plus the set up power poles where I hunt and left scrap wire/cut off ready rod Everywhere AHaa......Spent a hour with my pick-up magnet cleaning up ready rod pieces/bolts/washers..

Oh ok yeah if you're getting a static sound then it could be a coil or something lose I thought you was meaning all sounded good in relic trigger center and just the threshold was jittery or wobbling in others and that part is normal but I don't get any static noise.
I have the stock 950 and the little shooter and it sounds the same with both coils but I can turn up the gain more with the shooter and not get false signals like I do with the 950.
Hope you get it straightened out soon.

Sounds like a loose ground somewhere
Mine runs smooth with three different coils
When you get is running smooth the sounds it doesn't make are what you need to listen for when you are swinging fast
When it mulls out and gets dead quiet it's telling you to take another swing
At a slower rate
Go into pinpoint mode and you'll find something there every time

Those power poles you mentioned may be a big part of the problem
The coils see up too!

Good luck
When you get it running you will love it

Man I cannot geta smooth thershold. If I turn it up loud it will, but running on low it varies/jumpy? There is something wrong.I hope its not majour-kinda smells like burnt electronics in the housing?
I was sold this machine off another forum.Guy said it worked fine-musta been hoping for a newbie to buy it. What a scam-this things pretty used looking, should have not been so cheap lol.
Could have paid $100 more for one with a warrenty left, dang.
Im glad white's service dept is so good.Hope its not a lemon and can be saved. It still works but cannot be used for prospecting with out a smooth thershold.
I have tried everything but take it apart.Im pretty sure its in the headphone jack, maybe a bad ground wire.
