MXT quirk or is this normal?

Hello All,

I've been using the MXT for quite some time now, and have a quick question.

Going to do my best to describe it.

When sweeping along... many times I will get a good signal indicating penny/dime locked on with what appears to be no other targets around that signal. When I try to pinpoint usually the target is off center... then after re-sweeping the VDI shows trash next to the original target which is still registering dime/penny. Upon digging it's almost always trash and nothing else gives a signal. Any help or explanation would be appreciated.

Maybe I can answer this. This explination may apply to you or it may not. A trash target can sound and look good when the coil is not directly centered over the target. That's why it seems to move when you try to pinpoint. The target doesn't move. You are sweeping back and forth with the EDGE of the coil over the target because that's where you're getting the GOOD signal. The signal you WANT to hear.
Here's what I do. As soon as I locate a target I immediatly pull the trigger to pinpoint. Then resweep knowing the coil is centered over the target. With the MXT the coil MUST be centered over the target for accurate VDI and audible signals.

I just got a White's 6x10 DD and I think (haven't used it enough) this is a problem I am having? I can pinpoint real well with the 950 and the 4x6 shooter, but this 6x10 seems off center and what I think is a real good penny/dime signal turns into trash (after I dig up half the lawn finding it).

Also, when I get a good signal, I pull the trigger back to find how deep the target is and nothing happens? Let it go, find the target again, pull the trigger and maybe or maybe not it will sound off the target. This 6x10 just doesn't feel right. It seems very noisy too.

Does this sound familiar to anyone else?

Thx.

If you're using a DD, don't go for the center, go for the tip of your coil to figure out where it's at....

The DD coil puts down a blade that's aligned with the center of your coil...some call it the windshield wiper, but it's blade shaped. So, once you find something, zero in so it's centered in the blade with the pinpoint, then wiggle it back until the signal drops out...it'll be at the tip. Some people prefer to walk the coil forward and then it's at the BACK of the coil...but it's the easiest way to pinpoint a DD coil. Check out the pic for a visual....hope this helps!

The MXT disc is such that many bottle tops (the crimped steel ones) will ID as a good quarter or dime signal (depending on how rusty they are) when you are centered over them.

When I am hunting in an area where these bottle caps are plentiful, the easiest way to identify them before digging, is to take another pass over them in disc mode, but this time do it with the edge of the c oil. The MXT will then show them up as iron.

It's rather amusing watching two instructors discuss something in the office, they start having "board wars"....drawing board wars that is. Glad it helped out!

DPW,

I think that's what I'm experiencing, especially with the stock coil. It can be an annoyance, because if it sounds too suspicious I'll dig the offending target, once in a while there are some goodies sitting right next to the bad target which is usually masking them. Still a superb machine though.. very pleased with it.

I'm getting the itch, right now I'm deployed in Iraq, and since summer is here I want to do 2 things... ride my motorcycle and Treasure Hunt. Oh well only 2 more months.

Thank you for all the replies

Hi.

You say "trash" without stating what it is. What I think u are describing is just how any detector falses on Iron trash.

MXT is highly sensitive and will do that too some times, its just the behaviour of Iron, and I am glad it does not pinpoint correctly.

It may even pinpoint at two or more locations if you try from another angle.
