I am trying to get acquainted with a new MXT Pro. While air testing it seems the only settings I get a smooth threshold is "tone 2" in the relic mode. It seems this mode goes deeper also. Is this correct or am I setting up something wrong. What are your thoughts on this? Thanks

Are you doing the air testing in your house ?? or out side ??
Could be that you are picking up some EMI.

I got to a site last week with my MXT Pro and 5.3 coil, with the coil in the air, when I turned the MXT on, it went into over load, never had this happen with any MXT that I have ever owned....I had to hunt with another unit with noise cancel...
Later, thinking, I would have to send in my new Pro, I drove a block away and the MXT Pro was back to normal.
The next time, 2 days later, back at that same site, the MXT was fine.
The only thing that I could see was, the school was not having a football game, so no big lights, no PA system.
And I was more than 150 yards away from the football field.
So EMI can bother any unit...

The air test were in my house. I was thinking maybe less filtering gave a smoother threshold in 2 tone relic.

I can not answer why Relic sounds smoother than C&J, but it does for me, but I still use C&J when hunting, because of the Tone ID.
Go out side, find a clean spot on the ground to do your testing.
If all you have is the stock coil, then go for the 5.3 coil, I use the 5.3 over 90% of the time.
I have never found a place to use a bigger coil, I hunt in trashy area's..

On the regular mxt the primary relic mode has a smoother threshold because it has a slower sat speed than the alternate relic and the coin jewlry mode so I'm sure the same holds true for the mxt pro.
Nothing can be done the sat speeds in them modes is preset from whites but the wobbly threshold don't affect it's performance in any way you'll get use to it after awhile.

I do remember reading that somewhere also about the SAT speed is slower in Relic mode making the threshold smoother than in Coin/Jewelry mode.

Yeah it's in the mxt edge book the sat is slower in primary relic mode only the alt relic is same as c/j has a fast sat speed.
Anyone new to the mxt I would highly recommend Jeff Foster's book it's the an mxt bible explains so much about this machine makes learning it so much faster.

I've found after using my MXT most of the time with the threshold set to just audible, I get so used to the slight hum in the background that I'm uncomfortable using another machine with silent search. I find myself throwing a coin out fairly often to make sure the quiet machine is actually working if I go very far without a signal from something whether trash or a goody.

I am at about 6 months with my new MXT PRO. This is by far the best detector I have ever owned. I was having a terrible time and not having a whole lot of fun until I met a guy on the forums that gave me some lessons. I am not nor will I ever be as good as this ring killer dude, however since Aug 1st, I have found a good many rings, no gold yet but lots of silver. That said, he taught me to hunt in c/J, low gain, disc just below nickels and threshold low or no hum at all. I am very very deaf so I need to have a slight hum. I use the 5.3 loop only.Dig + signals only. I love my pro when it can't make up it's mind about the target. When it bounces between 5 to 40 and back to 12. Dig DIG. This is a good signal for two coins or jewelery.

Back aways in the forum, I picked up a trick that really works. With those same settings, you will sometimes see a target but will only hear a very very low sound. turn up gain all the way and listen to the loud signal. it may be a little difficult to pin point but there is a target down there. it still may be a pull tab, but who knows?
