MXT PRO - Target Tone Separation Question

I have a question regarding the MXT PRO and target tone separation. My brother recently bought the MXT PRO with the 950 stock coil. He normally hunts in C&J mode with the recommended discrimination and gain settings, and with the tones on. When swinging over a target (or targets), it seems to both of us that the detector does not give a very distinct tone for the target(s), but kind of runs together. My own detectors, a V3i with the D2 coil, and my old detector, and XLT with the old rainbow coil, both give pretty distinct tone separation, even in trashy areas. His MXT PRO is chattery, which I have read to be the case, and does not seem to give very distinct tones when sweeping over a target. Quite frankly I am not sure how he even picks out the good targets to dig, although he has done pretty good in finding good targets. He says he listens for the high pitch tone, but when I have heard it, it sure is not a very distinct sound like my V3i or XLT, or even his old 6000 DI. I know this is somewhat hard to explain (and probably understand), but is this normal for the MXT Pro, or could it be he has a bad coil? I am wondering if the coil is operating properly, but like I said, he has found quite a few good targets. Is there a way to test the coil other than trying another coil? I know there is on the V3i, but do not know if the only way to test whether the 950 coil is bad is to try another coil. Guess if there is not I could take off my D2 coil and try it on his MXT. Any opinions / help would be appreciated.

Can't say that I have that problem with mine. I would try a different coil for starters.

Thanks. Probably what we need to do. Only coil that we have that should work on his is my D2 coil that's on my V3i. Not many replies. Was hoping for more MXT Pro user comments. Not trying to bash the MXT. We both like our White Detectors.

I am not at all sure I am on the right track here but will take a stab at this. An MXT / MXT Pro has really quick recovery compared to many other detector models. That means that it can sound off on one target and be ready to analyze and sound off on the next target very quickly. At the same sweep speed an MXT will sound off twice on two close together targets when many other models will only sound off on the first target. My point is, in heavy trash areas you may hear many more signals in the same amount of time with an MXT than with many other models. This closer spacing of signals may be what you are running into. If so, try slowing your sweep speed down.

Hope this helps
Bob

Thanks for your input. Could be something to what you say since most of the areas we hunt are pretty trashy, but we have tried throwing a coin on top of the ground and it was still not a real distinct sound in our opinion. My V3i and XLT sound quite a bit better. However, I did notice when we went hunting for a little while today that his MXT Pro did sound a bit better. Maybe because we had a bunch of snow and now the ground is wetter. It has been real dry until we got about 20 inches of snow.

Barty,
I have the MXT Pro and absolutely love it. My numbers are accurate my tones are accurate. Many times I can guess what I'm about to dig, before I dig it. I can tell by what you've just said that there may be some kind of problem. You just said..."we have tried throwing a coin on top of the ground and it was still not a real distinct sound in our opinion." That in itself....knowing my machine would indicate talking to Whites for some expertise. My MXT is not chatty either. I ground balance and set the threshold to just a faint tone. It is quiet as can be.
If you check out my other post on "do you like your 12" stock coil"....I too was having a problem with it in the sense that I felt it wasn't picking up items that I knew were there. That led me to try another coil which I use all the time and have dug coins to 12" down. However, others love their 950!!
Also, I've hunted in wet weather in the spring and the driest conditions in the summer and do not notice a difference in my MXT's operation. The 20" of snow in my opinion won't affect it any...again...my opinion based on my unit that I have.
I would honestly tell Whites about your issue and perhaps they can assist you with a new coil or other recommendations. Also, make sure your batteries are good fresh Duracells or Energizers. That would be the first thing I'd check/change if I suspected my unit were not functioning properly.
Something to check as well. You keep talking about the tone/signal/sound your hearing. Could there be a problem with your buddies headphones? Have you tried unplugging the unit to see how it sounds on a quarter or dime w/o the headset? Again, just thinking of what your problem might be??

I also just bought a MXT PRO, I have been playing around for a couple of days with it now and mine too is chattery
at the factory settings in c/j quiet in relic. I'am running a D2 DD coil and have found if I cut Back on my threshold till
I can hardly hear it all is good. I also noticed after i start swinging it settles down? I ground balance in a clean spot of
at least 12" on the pinpoint and then lock my tracking. I have a V3i also and it is quiet and smooth compared to the MXT PRO
If i could just run at the factoy settings on c/j w/out the chattering I would have no complaints. Found if i cut back on the gain the
chattering will disappear but at what sacrafice in depth? I already run the disc. wide open and it really helps in the depth dept.
Any suggestions would be very helpful.

P.S. I still really like this machine.. Just a couple of bugs to work out

[size=large]when i had my MXT PRO i had the D2 coil on it. it was sweet. picked out two quarters sitting with-in an inch of each other with distinct sounding from each one. area wasn't trashy but had no problem even in trashy areas. never tried the 950 coil.

Thanks guys for the suggestions/opinions. I'll pass them along to my brother.

In response to a previous reply, my brother seldom uses headphones, although he probably should use them. May use them when it is windy and hard to hear, otherwise, usually don't use them. I suppose headphones would probably help hear the deeper signals better.

I don't have my MXT Pro yet, but I have read and re-read the manual, and I now have a question for you... You say you lock the Tracking after GB'ing. I thought that the idea was to GB and autotrack, then press and hold the GRAB to lock the tracking if needed. Did I misunderstand that?

Robby, You didn't mis-understand, it just a different method. Either method will work but if you allow the detector to auto trac, it can drift when you don't want it to. For example, you are swinging away and come across a faint signal and get a tiny beep so you swing right over it again just to hear silence. You assume the MXT is just being its normal chattery self so you continue on. Unfortunately, the MXT thought it was ground mineralization and the auto feature phased it out on the second swing.

The advanced method of GB'ing is to achieve a good GB and lock it, then update only when you find another clean spot to re-GB. All the faint targets will show up with each swing instead of phasing out.
