MXT Pro or MXT??

Tenspeed

Member
I am a Minelab Etrac user who is looking at buying an MXT Pro or MXT for hunting hot soils in Virginia.

My question is: Is the difference in cost justifiable based on difference in features and performance?

I am trying to make a decision and thought this forum would be the best location to throw the question out.

Thanks for any input!

[size=large]one factor i can think of right off the bat is, are you gunna do any night hunting? the pro has a backlight. the reg mxt don't.
do you want tones?pro has em and the reg mxt don't. they are basically the same except for those features and grab. if ya get the basic mxt you'll always wonder if the pro is that much better.

Thanks for the feedback!

I will most likely go with the MXT Pro because of the two things you mentioned. I sometimes hunt up until dark (especially on short winter days) and am used to the tones from my Minelab machines.

I use the the older MXT and you can get two tones out of it.
It does not have the light two tones you'll get by
using relic mode trigger forward.
High tones for the non ferrous item and low tones for the iron based
targets.
I use to use the coin/jewelry mode but since I've gone to this
other style of hunting plus using the VDI numbers
my finds have encreased quite a good amount.
I have the 9.5 coil on the MXT

[size=large]i have found that at times i prefer to hear the minelab flutes instead of the whites noises. like you i hunt til it's dark at times and that backlight really helps. same is true of the ml with its backlight. but i also like the faster swing of the whites.i just enjoy using both depending on my enrgy levels and patience. it is a hobby not a job.
as far as what joel says, i gotta try that out.

I'd go with the Pro over the std MXT. The backlight is crucial for obvious reasons if you need it. . not just at night, there's plenty of times I hunt into low-light areas during the day (trees, cover) when it really helps. I usually hunt in Relic/Iron ID (mimics the std. MXT relic/trigger forward with no disc.) but switch to C/J w/tones occasionally if I'm wanting a change-up. . . nice option to keep things interesting or to cherry pick. More versatile = more fun IMHO . .

Thanks for the input everyone! I ordered an MXT Pro today with a 6 x 10 DD coil. My friend/dealer also has an unused and very reasonably priced 10 x 14 DD coil that I will most likely buy too.

It will be interesting to learn a new machine since I have only used Minelab (except for a short stint with an Ace 250) and I will have to practice a lot to be semi proficient before DIV XIX in November.

The MXT Pro W/stock coil and a 6X10 is a great combination and they will serve you well but I might suggest trying out the White's 10X14 DD before buying. Many have found the coil to be very heavy and tiresome to use for extended times and I have found very little depth gained using it. My recommendation for a larger DD style coil, (for what it is worth) would be the SEF 10X12. JMHO.

I had the MXT and eventually got the MXT Pro. The extra features of the Pro are very nice and I'm glad I made the switch. cch

The 11" Pro coil is going to feel like a feather after you swing the 10x14 for awhile. Better start going to the gym or pickup a swingy thing. Wouldnt want to have to stop at lunch due to tendon strain.:)

As you already have detector experience, I think you'll find you will get a pretty good handle on the MXT fairly quickly. I picked up a clean used one several years ago and thanks to the fact that I'd done quite a bit of detecting with several other machines the learning curve was pretty quick and easy.

I picked up my new coil (with shaft) when I paid for my MXT Pro on Friday. It is actually an 8 x 14 and doesn't feel too heavy (wait til the first day at DIV and if I use it then I will probably say differently). Even if I don't like it I have so little cost in it that I should be able to get my money back if I want to move it.

My new machine should be here today or tomorrow so that I can start practicing. Some friends in my club showed me their MXT and how it reacts. They have hunted DIV with an MXT and are already helping.

I will also take it to MS when I go visit my dad next week so I can try it in a variety of different soils. It will be hard not to hunt all the time with my ETrac though.

I can't wait to learn something new.

Thanks for all the input!!

I have the Pro. It will do everything the non-pro version, plus a couple of bells and whistles. It's worth xtra $100.
