Ground balance. Go up and down area inches, 3 times... Nothing else ...is that it?

When I'm done and I start ' tecting I get what I would call chatter ... Can I do anything to reduce, preferably eliminate the chatter?

My settings are at the factory recommended settings.(triangles)

Thanks

You mentioned pretty vague steps about ground balancing. To be sure you are balancing correctly, be sure you follow the full steps required. There are 2 ways to GB the PRO version.
#1 With the TRAC switch in LOCK position, pump coil several times in a "clean area" and then press GROUND GRAB button.
.....OR.....
#2 With the TRAC switch in GROUND position, pump coil several times in a "clean area".

If the chattering is caused from the machine not being Ground Balanced correctly, it should only chatter from the effects of the ground. Try this test... While your experiencing chattering, hold the coil very still and well above the ground. If it is still chattering, it has nothing to do with the GB.

After these steps, if you still get chattering I would guess fresh batteries may help. Mine, as well as several others, begins chattering at about 9 volts. Some say theirs begin chattering before it shows 9 volts. Others insists our detector is not doing any such thing. I wish I had their ability to see what someone elses detector is doing from afar, across the Web. Maybe I wouldn't even need a detector to find stuff under ground.

thanks guys I'll try all of the above

[size=large]the manual does say the noise can be caused because of the machine trying to ground track automatically and it's recommened one should use the lock position once you're ground balanced at the start. so the problem just might be your ground is too un-even.

I'll read that part of the book slower to be sure I'm doing it right. But I've had the same thing happen at different places.
It maybe apples and oranges but I've never had that issue with the XLT

If all else fails, its probably EMI.

The GMT, MXT and MXT Pro use a unique ground analysis engine and the MXT also uses a reactive impedance transformation network to boost transmitter voltage for higher sensitivity. Because of these changes, you should experience better tracking and better depth and target ID. These two changes alone might contribute to the slightly more noisy, but common operation of the MXT series. The various adjustments already suggested will probably help and reduction of sensitivity will probably do the most good. Many users will have the sensitivity set too high resulting in LESS depth instead of more. High sensitivity will amplify the ground noise which will mask the deepest of the target signals.

Refer to Operator Manual Page 13, #7. It only takes a few quick moves, bobbing the coil, briskly, from about 6"-8" (no more) down to about

You can also get alot of "chatter" from EM sources like power lines both above and below ground, transformers, relays, signal controllers ect.

To achieve max depth for your ground conditions is to ground balance the detector have the tone were you can here the slight hum then lower coil about 1/2 " above the ground and turn the gain up to were you start to hear background noise then turn back just a hair.

Hi Guy Just a Question regarding GB the MXT Pro , Can I GB while the toggle switch is in Salt by simply hitting the Touch pad ground grab button and pumping the coil? Or what is the correct procedure..

Thanks in Anticipation
