MXT Pro Coil Question

JaWi.

Member
Just purchased a new MXT Pro and have the $150 Whites Dollars to spend on a coil. I am a coin and jewelry hunter, schools, parks, old homes etc. Looking for the best coil to go with the 950 coil which I have. I do like concentric coils for sure but have used DD coils also. I live in Wisconsin and the soil is not very mineralized in most places. Thinking on the 5.3, 4x6 or 5x9 ? I read a lot on the forms and see a lot prefer the bigger 5x9DD. Seems to me that it will be a lot on depth like the 950. May separate alittle better. In soil not very hot would the 950 be deeper? Let me hear other thoughts please. Thanks Joe

I would get the eclipse 5.3. It is a great coil. I use my 5.3 on my MXT pro 95% of the time. You will be glad you have it when you encounter trashier areas. I also have the 4x6 but prefer the 5.3 over it.

The 5.3 may give a little more depth, but if you get into heavy trash, it won't compete with the 4x6 and potentially even the 6x9...I have run both and if I was looking to complement the stock coil, I would be looking for something to help out in the trash and in my book, that means a DD coil. When hunting in parks with lots of pull tabs, can slaw etc. the only way to keep good targets from being masked by rejected targets is to be able to pick around carefully through the trash....I am a huge fan of DD coils for their ability to sample a narrow yet long slice of ground where the concentrics require much more overlap to effecively cover the ground due to the V shape signal they pump out. DD coils are essentially the same size/shape to their depth limit and so less overlap means more ground covered effectively. IMHO

5.3 coil is my second choice after the stock coil.

I am primarily a coin & jewelry hunter in turf locations. Most of my sites have light to moderate trash. Ground mineralization is very ferrous but at moderate strength levels.

When swinging my MXT Pro, I prefer concentric coils, Eclipse 950 and 5.3. My reasons are: the concentric coils pinpoint, size and shape targets much more easily; they get better depth in my soil and they ID ferrous targets better than DD coils. The DDs do have an advantage in target separation so I will switch to a 4X6 Shooter when the trash levels become extreme.

Some people love their DD coils so there is a personal preference factor also. That said, I would feel lost without an Eclipse 5.3, 6.5
