Please disregard chuckiao's response. I forgot to delete it before I moved the thread from a different forum.

"The MXT Edge" by Jeff Foster is really helpful for explaining and teaching how to use the MXT. Don't expect to know everything right away, once you know the basic stuff you need to dig lots of signals so you cna hear what the machine is telling you. The very basic stuff you HAVE to know are.....

How to ground balance. Remember to re-GB often if you choose to lock the ground afterwards.
How to set the threshold.
Begin with a smaller coil when first starting out since they are more accurate at target ID. Larger coils can be used when you learn the detector more.
Try to avoid hotrocks when learning the detector, these areas are difficult for even the advanced users. The MXT tells you 'hotrock' on the screen if you find any.
Because you have the PRO....I suggest you learn the coin/jewelry mode with 2 tone target ID. There are several combinations of modes and tones but don't become confused with them, you should learn one and stick with it because when you switch it sounds and behaves much differently than your used to.

This is probably the biggest help when I was learning this machine. I was coming from a one tone older Whites detector and wasn't used to the multiple tones. I turned tone mode off and once I found a target I'd switch tone mode on and see what it sounded like. Once I got a little more experience I switched it to multitone completely. Now I swing it instictively and the multitones are no problem at all.

Actually, I really meant to say MULTI-TONE.....instead of 2 tone. Multi-tone has 7 notes, so they say, but it seems like more. The lower the sound the lower it is on the VDI scale, opposite for high tones. It keeps you from having to check the screen with every target, you can easily recognize the tones. What ever you choose, stick with it long enough that your comfortable with it before experimenting with other tone or mode settings.

Here are some VDI numbers for MXT PRO:

quarters: 83, 84, 85, 86
dimes: 77, 78, 79 (silver dimes read 80)
nickels: 18, 20 (real easy - dig those 2 numbers every time)
pennies: zinc: 62 and 65 ( copper 74 ) (old Indian head pennies read 72)
Half dollars: 89, 90, 91

Some of the above VDI numbers may turn out to be junk - but still dig em

Tone ID is simple for me. I simply ignore the low grunts and I almost always dig the high pitch beeps.

There are some good suggestions given here ...

I would add... You should plant a garden. A target garden ...

Bury a variety of known targets at different (and known) depths in your yard .. And use them to practice on...

The MXT is a very capable machine ... you will love it ...
