MXT Pro Air VDI Test on Six Coils

I don't know if everyone with an MXT has done this, but I was very bored yesterday so I did an air vdi test and recorded all the results. If nothing else, maybe it can be just a little bit useful to those MXT owners who haven't done this yet and were curious about some of the vdi's.

Test was conducted outside on a wood table with shaft well off the table. There was no electrical lines or other interference nearby. I also turned off my cell phone.

Each item was waved 4"-5" below the coil. After each wave, I checked the display for the vdi. If the first three passes matched, then I used that number. If there was any difference, then I went to 5 passes and sometimes more. The targets were all previously "dug" items from past hunts, with the exception of the gold rings.

Of note- the 5.3 and 6x10 were a lot closer in readings than I anticipated. My perception had been that they were quite different. The 10DD was a little off, just like I had previously known.

Of particular items- Indian Head penny came in much lower than I expected. I know I have dug these at a 57, but they came to around 50 in air.
Nickels were dead on 18-20.
Dimes 76-80.
Quarters 81-84 (except 10DD).

Maybe someone can take some information from this and it be useful!

That is just that.......Air testing and a good chart for that.

In the ground many items have a different VDI. Indian cents will bounce all over the place when in the ground, same with many other items. It all depends on the condition of the soil, coin wear, and positioning. I've had silver dimes ring up at 76. Granted it was one thin dime, but still rang up like a copper penny.

The chart does give a good idea on the VDI's. Thanks for the post and your time. HH, Nancy

Thanks ga5150, The way i see it if you dig everything above 60 vdi, you will do very well. I know there is alot of good targets below that, but with a bad back i just can,t dig everything. Thanks for the post. Flintstone

I 100% agree Nancy. In the ground, it always seems to be just a bit different. That's why I still dig it, even if unsure!

Looks like the 10"DD is a slightly different animal than the other coils. I just bought one for my MXT but haven't tried it out yet. I hope to get good depth with it...John

The D2 makes you dig targets that you may normally not dig, that is for sure. I appreciate that trait but it can also frustrate you when you think you found a good target and it is only a bottle cap, for example. I theorize that because the D2 shows slightly higher than average VDI's it will still show average VDI's at greater depths, or at least "dig signals" deeper than other coils. As with every coil, there is a balance and when you increase one aspect, you lower another(depth vs VDI accuracy vs separation vs coverage). You have to take the good with the bad.

are the mxt and the mxt pro about the same on the numbers? i have the mxt and a 5.3, 950, and 6x10.

i just got some relic reproduction bullets and a few old musket balls to re bury and some targets for the test garden i now have a good place for. i plan to bury and tamp the soil down packed on the targets. i have found that dirt piles of aireated soil seem to be a lot differnt to detect for some reason. maybe GB i dont know. but curious if the listed numbers by ga5150 are the same on the mxt and the pro.

Dixiedigger57, the VDI numbers are the same on both models. Almost all of the circuitry is the same with a few features given/taken between the two models.

it looks like your 6x10DD behaves like mine does, short depth on small gold items, both on air and ground testing

thanks aaron good chart to keep

YW, And the props for the chart goes to ga5150. I had to re-read to figure out what you were thanking me for, But I got it now. :clapping:

and a thanks to ga5150 from me too! i live in Warner Robins Georgia and work in Macon. where ya from ga5150? always looking for someone for our little group here.

I'm from Gwinnett Co. in the Lilburn area, but have lived the last six years outside of Baltimore, MD. I don't think I'm quite close enough to hunt with anyone there!
