MXT or ML Sov GT for prospecting?? Help me Pick!

With the ground tracking in all metal on the GT from what I hear it's a very good prospecting machine. Don't know how it compares for that style of hunting to the MXT, though. MXT will for sure be lighter unless you hip mount your GT's control box. One thing to consider is that Minelab cut their teeth on building prospecting machines so the coil selection and technology for that purpose may be a little more well suited on the GT than the MXT.

I've used both and the MXT is the hands down winner. Both the disc. and AM modes are super sensitive to small gold and provide iron (and VDI) ID. Of course, the ID is nowhere near 100% (where I hunt), but still useful. The disc.mode on the GT is basically useless for prospecting and the AM mode isn't as flexible or sensitive as found on the MXT. Sure, there are a few people out there swinging a GT for nuggets.. but compare that to those swinging an MXT. Check out the various forums (gold prospecting) and Steve's recommendations at AMDS. That'll tell you how the hog ate the cabbage. ..Willy.

Fer sure the MXT is the better prospector, much better resolution and discrimination, I second that Willy. Fly that same question over at the prospecting forum and you'll get the benefit of all their experience. The MXT has the same detector engine as the GMT, which boasts the best ground tracking of the VLF nugget machines.
The Sovereign is a better beach machine, no question. It is the little brother of the Excaliber, just not water proof.

The Sov is not a prospecting machine. There are better options. The Sov is said to be an awsome coin machine land or beach. Excal is a water proof Sov.

I believe I've read that the ground tracking/fixed functions were added to all metal mode on the GT so that it would make a better prospecting machine. Don't know how it compares to an MXT for that, though.

Still doesn't hold a candle to the MXT for prospecting. I've tested the Sov. GT against the MXT on in-ground gold nuggets and it's MXT all the way. ..Willy.

I've
researched this question some. I own the MXT, but have yet to prospect
with it and believe it will outdo the GT for that. However, the GT is
advertised some as a prospecting machine, but only for gold larger than
about half a gram [best I can find out]. Critterhunter or someone,
please show us some comparison tests. It seems that the GT ought to be
able to handle bad ground better and get the deeper, larger nuggets
that the MXT might miss. But as Willy has pointed out on another
thread, a larger coil on the MXT might compete well with the GT for
those. More research needed. James

The MXT hands down. I beat a ML 4500 last year in NV with the MXT. The MXT is a gold magnet for nuggets and gold chains in parks.....

That's a good question. The GT should get deeper on nuggets once they reach a certain size, and the more mineralized the ground the deeper the difference should show between the two. Nothing handles bad ground better than Minelab's FBS or BBS technology. But you have to ask yourself just how many nuggets you'll be coming across that are big enough to give the GT the advantage. Many believe the Sovereign is the best gold (ring) machine on the market, but we're talking very small nuggets here. I will say that I've dug smaller targets with the GT than any other machine I've ever owned. I'm talking tiny little things at some pretty amazing depth. That doesn't mean it's going to be as good for tiny nuggets, though. I'd run some tests but I don't have any nuggets to compare. Not my cup of tea. I'd rely on the majority opinion that the MXT is better for small nuggets. Sure sounds that way.

Well, I've posted this before, but the smallest 'nuggets' I was picking up in the Brooks range were about 1/3 GRAIN with the MXT and 6x10" coil. This was in ground that could only be effectively hunted with Minelab PI's or a CZ6a running in salt mode. Some of the pieces might have been even smaller, but I didn't bother weighing them. Another nice thing about the MXT is that the disc. mode is also super sensitive and can, quite easily, be used for nugget hunting. The Sov. GT disc. mode is basically a waste of time re. nuggets. Depth-wise, if a person is running at HyperSAT, max. sens., and with a larger DD coil (in bad ground), I doubt that there's really any VLF detector (even BBS/FBS) that would go any deeper. Maybe an F75 with the trigger kept forward would do so, though I'm not sure. What makes it so good, aside from the VSAT, is the super fast ground tracking.. it's nothing short of unreal. Especially when hunting in areas loaded with hotrocks (often reading as iron) the fast tracking and VSAT allow it to, let's say, track out a hotrock and then 'jump' back to a different ground setting without wild overshoots. It's about the only detector that I've tested which is that capable. Sure, there are machines that are more sensitive to small gold (XTerra 70/705 w. DD HF coil), but they just cant handle that kind of ground effectively. I'm not being an MXT/White's fanboy here.. just laying out my own conclusions based on experience with a number of detectors over quite the few years. ..Willy.

Willy is absolutely correct! HyperSat all the way up with Sens all the way up or close and just pick up those 1/2 grain (not gram) pickers 3 inches down.....

I agree with willy. MXT is an excellent detector and I believe it's the best of the VLF machines. The PI machines are in a league of their own and are much better for prospecting in most area's. VLF machines kick the PI's butts on trashy ground and area's near power lines, phone cables and other EMF emitting occurences. You should decide according to where you are going to be able to use your machine and what the conditions there are. My MXT outperforms my mates Xterra 705 easily. On open area's I run the 15 x 18' SEF Butterfly coil. My mates with 4500's are impressed with the depth i'm getting on boot tacs, nails and buttons. I trust strong signals if it says it is iron but I always dig every feint signal no matter what it says.

Dicko..
