MXT on the Beach

Went out this past weekend for some beach hunting. Michigan, Fresh water - Caseville at Lake Huron. Had a ball. Found some coins and some junk, as usual.
Now I have a problem. Sand has gotten into the lower shaft and now it will not slip adjust in the next rod length. The clamping collar turns freely. I removed the coil and removed the upper rod from the MXT housing and filled the lower rod with water and sloshed it around and seem to have flushed out all the loose sand but it still will not budge.
The MXT is advertised as suitable for water use as long as you don't get the electronics wet. No one ever told me I cannot get the lower rod wet.
Any and all help will be appreciated.

This works for me: I drilled two small holes at the botom of the shaft, just above where the coil connects to the lower rod. I also put silicon seal
inside the top of the rod, where it connects to the control box. And finally, I but silicon seal around the coil cover so that no sand sand would get in.
When I go into the water I extend the shaft to its longest position. I'm 6 feet tall and I can almost go up to my waste. I have never had any problems or accidents (touch wood, or gold, or silver)
I also use the strap and tighten it so that the detector is firmly connected to my arm. I use a long handled sand scope (alum. handle) and I can set it on a clamp on my waste so that I can retreive the stuff with my free hand.
Hope this helps ... RonL(Edm)

Have that problem with my Surf Pi Pro all the time. Just keep twisting, pushing, pulling, while shooting water through the holes. It will come loose.

Whites says that they have not been able to find a solution to the problem on any of their adjustable shaft models.
I damaged my lower shaft getting it freed up and Whites was good enough to send me a replacement at no charge. It's nice to do business with a company that supports the customer after the sale.
I will try some ideas that I have on the damaged one and see if I can do anything about it. Will let y'all know some time in the future...
If anyone has a fix that really works, let's all send them in to Whites for their evaluation. I am sure we'll get a lot of, "We already tried that," but just maybe...
