MXT in fresh water

Mirco

New member
Hi all!
I have a situation here. In two days I am leaving on a trip overseas with (like I hoped) alot of land and fresh water (shallow, knee-waist deep) detecting. For this trip I purchased MXT (for land) and SURF PI PRO ( for water). Today I learned that PI PRO is good for salt water but is of no use for fresh water.

What to do now?

Can I use MXT in shallow fresh water? Will it detect OK? Is it water proof?
Or still it is better to take PI PRO with me and detect without discrimination?

I am at a loss and hope to hear great ideas of experienced members!!

Thank you!

You can use the MXT in fresh water and I have done so, but you don't want to lift the coil up so as the water is able to drain back into the control box. The MXT's coils are water proof but the MXT itself is not water proof. Water will damage your MXT. Good luck. HH Dennis in Idaho

It's easy to forget about lifting the coil because it is a habit. I plugged my shaft with a cork to prevent water from running down the inside of the tube if I accidentally lift the coil. I also have a rubber disk on the outside of the tube in front of the 1st connector again to help water from running back to the box. Of course if you drop it.

The PI will work great in fresh water you will just dig ferrous junk if it is there. Rob

Rod, the cork thing was a great idea. Never thought of that. I'm going to be hunting in the rivers up in Northern California in July, and that's a great idea. Sometimes we are so locked into hunting, we lose our minds at times. Gold good, water bad.

The MXT works great in fresh water. Dennis and Rob said the most important detail about NOT getting water in the control box. Good luck and HH, Nancy
