I just got my new mxt monday and have been out playing with it. Could someone tell me a easy way of telling a can from a dime other than digging thanks gary

Hmm, cans around here usually come is as quarters or half-dollars, not dimes. <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":)">
Anyway, perhaps the best way is to "size" the target in pinpoint mode. Try it in you backyard A dime and a crushed can on the ground and sweep (slowly) in pinpoint mode, around 2 to 3 inches off the ground. The dime should make a VCO tone just over a very small range of coil motion. The can's response should be much broader.
To get a more accurate "sizing" (but you lose accuracy on the depth readout), move the coil off the target until the VCO goes quite and release/press the trigger two or three times to detune the detector a bit, now holding the pinpoint trigger in, go back and resize the target again.
Now if you had asked how to tell a pulltab from a ring .... <img src="/metal/html/sad.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":sad">

Here in Florida, cans come in at penny/dime.
But a can is not the same size as dime. If target seems bigger than ID, I would say can.
I get thrown sometimes by tops of Tennis ball cans. But if I am in a park close to a tennis court, I do not dig, if size is bigger then ID target. I have dug way too many tops on these cans.
The more you use the MXT, the more you will learn possible ID of targets.
Possible ID is the key. I have gotten a quarter reading and out popped a large silver ring and the Micky Mouse shown below.
I have also had a ring with an ID of pennny/dime.
Good luck

Gary, because aluminum cans are much bigger than dimes, there are several quick ways to determine the difference. One, is to determine the "size" of the target. Switch to the pinpointing mode, and pass the coil over the target site. Dimes will give "small" signals, cans "big" signals. Another way is to keep an eye on the depth reading as you pass the coil over the target. Cans, due to their larger size, will be "seen" as "closer" than they really are. If, while pinpointing, your coil is 4 to 6 inches off of the ground, and yet there is a depth reading of 1" or 2" (or there abouts), means you are dealing with a target much bigger then a dime. Hope this helps; HH Jim
