MXT good, but.......

Old Katz

New member
The MXT has been a good machine but it gets so heavy
after swinging it for awhile I wonder if it's possible for Whites
to have made it lighter, using lighter materials without
the quality suffering. Maybe they will find away to put it in a smaller
package like the Prizms.

Well, I can dream can't I?

Definetly gets too heavy, my elbow and forarm, although popeye size on the right from having an Eagle Spectrum before, are really feeling the wear and tear. The MXT is heavy especially when you relic hunt from sunup untill after dark sometimes. I was asking earlier if there was a hip mount for it. They have one for the xlt but I cannot seem to get any info for the MXT yet.

I was complaining about the weight and my arms getting tired also . Well a few weeks ago I decided to try the SEF 8x6 coil and that solved most of my problems with the weight and balance I really love the new coil and it has made my detector feel so much lighter . I had also been complaining that my white 6X10 coil wasn't getting as deep as I thought it should or would like for it too . The first week I had my new SEF 8x6 I dug a mercury at 9 inches and a wheat penny at 8 inches , I couldn't ask for anymore than that more to my liking .So what I am trying to say is the new coil solved the weight and balance problem and gave me better depth than that I wanted. To me it made my MXT like a whole different machine . I am sure not everyone would agree with this but its my personal opinion and experiences. I also have a detech 8 inch DD coil it gave better depth than my 6x10 did , but was also heavy to swing as its a thick round solid type coil . Maybe this will give you some ideas how to solve your problems with the weight . Worked for me anyway .

While i dont have a 6x10 coil, i do have the 8x6 and can hardly tell its on there...8 hours and not tired..im 50 so no spring chicken and coil seems to work excellent and great depth...Curt

Hey Curt you are a young guy yet I'm not sure about Katz but I am 62 1/2 now . lol

larger coil such as the 10" DD or 12" from White's or a 10X12 or larger SEF coil, then that can certainly cause more fatigue than would a smaller-than-stock coil. Also, if you are operating with the rod extended too far or perhaps using too fast a sweep speed can add to the fatigue.

I prefer the 5.3 Eclipse as a most-used coil on the MXT, and with a proper rod length and functional sweep speed, the MXT isn't bad. I ought to know because I live in pain, 24/7, in my back and down my right leg and it wraps around my ankle and foot on my left side, and both shoulder are bad. I'm right-handed and hunt with my cane in my left. For some of my hunting tasks I am using a Tek. Omega due to the very light-weight design, but while it's lighter than an MXT, he MXT still isn't all that bad. There are many others on the market that I find more tiring. That includes some good White's models that call for a faster sweep speed than the MXT.

Jeez Monte. You're making me feel like a sissy not being able to hunt with my injured back. I guess that's where the universal respect you get comes from. Good for you, keep it up. You're inspiring me to look forward to hopefully hunting again. Thanks.

The Excelerator SEF coils are also known as "Butterfly" coils from Kellyco.

I guess they could be made from Carbon Fiber or Graphite for box, upper rod and lower rods, then raise the prices another 250 dollars. :(

Yes, they work very much like the DD style coils.

Personally, I like the housing and configuration of the XLT/DFX/MXT/Classic SL models. Adds to the balance with the battery system positioned back there, and I feel the metal housing construction contributes a LOT of dealing with EMI. Some other materials might be lighter and still be rather durable, I'm sure, but if it meant a detector with more electrical interference ... no thanks.

Carbon fiber and or graphite could be lined with copper to help with EMI.

A while back I was asked by the Whites folks what I thought about a machine box being made with a high quality plastic. (I'm not a go to guy but they were getting a feel for what customers thought is all.) Back then I said that I really like the aircraft aluminum and my opinion is still the same. With all the advances in micro tech and camera grade resins, it is probably inevitable that a change will be coming, but for now....they are packing that box with more possibilities than any other....and keeping the weight low for function. The whole design is tough to beat. Add to that the apparent SEF benifit.....nice!

That decision to "stick" has proven to be a good call. JMHO

Well If i could make one change in the MXT, it would be to make it RAIN PROOF, I can live with everything else that is, It is already one of the best. This would just put the icing on the cake.

Hi Katz,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,I believe they make a wast mount for the Mxt You might try that, I tighten the strap on my four arm and run with a short stick, seems to keep
the wight on your upper arm more. instead of just at the hand grip, I hunt quite a few hours a day with mine I haven't had any complaints as of yet, maybe when I
get a little older, hope that helps 1230@$tree
