MXT "going dead"

jah

New member
I have an MXT and an MXT300, and I love them both--have made some good finds with both. I have recently been having problems with both of them "going dead" on me, though. In other words, the threshold is still making the slight humming noise, but when you pass the loop over metal, there's NO SOUND! Often I find that I've been hunting several minutes or more before I realize it, because the machine is still humming slightly. The only way I can tell it's not detecting is to bring it close to my shovel or some other metal, and I get NO SIGNAL! I"ve tried changing the batteries AND the loops, but the problem still comes back. I can cut the machine off and then back on, and it will work properly for a while, but at some point usually "goes dead" again! I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced a similar problem--sure is aggravating! Thanks! Jack.

I would contact Whites service center and ask why,....... especially with both machines doing the same thing. That would be aggravating! ...

One I could see, but both at once I find hard to believe. Rob

Hi:
Are you using headphones?
If you are using the same headphones on both units
the headphones may have a short in them.

I have had this happen to me with mine where the cord
attaches to the ear piece.

Yes, I use headphones, but the tiny hum from the threshold setting never goes away--that's why I ruled out the headphones. Usually just before "going dead" the detector makes a sound like passing over a hot rock, then it loses it's ability to locate metal until I turn it off and back on again. Beats me! I'm running the discriminate at between 2 and 3 and when I can-usually most of the time-- the gain is ramped up all the way--+3--hoping to get more depth. Am I doing something wrong with these controls? I seem to be getting great depth and sensitivity at these settings until it stops detecting. Thanks to all who replied to my plea for help! Jack. I'll call White's on Monday--sounds like a "loose screw" either in the detector or the operator!

I'm assuming you've checked each individual battery to see if they're all performing equally? Preferably after they've had a load on them for a while. Worth a try.

My Whites M6 does the exact same thing. It will randomly stop detecting metal even though the batteries are fresh and the headset is working. The only fix I can find is to turn the machine off and on again.

Yes--brand new batteries this time, and if they register below 11 on the machine's battery check, I replace them. Sounds like The M6 is having similar problems--anyone offered you any suggestions? Thanks for ALL the responses! Jack.

Seems a bit unlikely to be having the same problem with 2 machines. Are you hunting in cold temperatures, by chance?
BB

Yes, usually in the upper 30's to low 40's--think that might be it? Although when it happened yesterday, it was probably mid to maybe upper 40's!

I bought a MXT last fall and will use it come spring so not sure if cold will affect it.
The reason I'm saying this is I have a XLT that I've used in late fall in up to-5c for two to three hours at a time with a few inches of snow on the ground and never had problems with it.
I've had to reboot it at times when it would act up and this was in the warmer summer months.
Looking forward to getting to use and know the MXT in the Spring.
Perhaps the battery pod is not making a good connection.contact points problem maybe !
Just my opinion...

Thanks, Joel!

I guess I forgot to explain to everyone that both machines didn't go dead the same day,BUT, it has happened with both machines on different occasions. For instance, it first happened with my 3 year old mxt a few times, so yesterday I took the mxt300 unit with a couple of different loops. The problem happened with an Eclipse shooter DD loop. That's when I put in fresh batteries and the problem persisted. I did not switch to the standard loop this time to see if that would make a difference, because I was in thick, steep terrain and very tired--heading home!

Again, THANKS to all who have responded!--It's great to know that there are people out there who are willing to help fellow detectorists! I'm sending you all a $20 gold piece! Just kidding, but I wish I could! Jack.

Are you using the same battery pack on both MXT's ?
Check each battery.
Make sure that all battery's are put in like they are to be put in, I take in the past, a few had this problem and found just one battery was in back wards...
Did you buy all the battery's at the same time and place ?
I buy good battery's, I tried some from the dollar store and when I checked them, some were all ready down. Also seen the cheap battery's leak before there down
With new battery's, you should get more than 11 volts, should be over 12 volts.
If you are out in the cold, this could be a problem.
I never drop the battery pack in, I slide it in easy, so I don't bend the prongs.
Good Luck.

No, I have 4 separate battery packs--all with fresh batteries that read about 13v--when they get down to about 10 or 11, I usually slip in a fresh pack. I do hunt in the cold a lot, but up until about two weeks ago, I never had this problem...and the weather hasn't varied that much these past two weeks (If it's below freezing, I usually don't go.) Also the spare battery pack is kept in my vest with one of thoose "shake up" hand warmers.

Thanks, B.J.!

Thanks B.J.! I've already emailed them, and a call is the first thing on my "to do" list for tomorrow!

Just had a simular problem with my MXT 300. It would screech and then go dead. Took me a while but finally figured out that the coils screw connector had a short in it. Sent it to whites with my findings and they sent a new coil with a nice note thanking me for giving them all my findings which made their job easy. The connector did have a broken wire in it. Whites service and speedy return was fantastic. It also reaffirmed why i bought a whites in the first place. Hope you have the same luck i had.

Hi Jah
I bought my mxt300 december 30th. I had that happen to me last weekend and today january 31st. One thing I noticed today is the screen is still working and shows changing numbers when swinging but no sound other than the hum. I turned it off and on several times flipped all switches and twisted all knobs to no avail then It just came on like it went away. All of a sudden. Fortunately for me I live near the factory and will hand carry it monday back to the factory.
