MXT for gold nuggets

The vast majority of gold nuggets in this area are very small and Gold Bug II users are sucessful here. What would be the most effective coil for hunting very tiny gold nuggets with the MXT?

Thank you much for the information.:twodetecting:

Just some observations from a hunt in Nevada last summer. I was using the MXT with the 4x6 shooter. My buddy was using a gold bug II and one other guy with us had a Minelab GP3500. The Minelab hit a nugget in the bedrock of an old volcanic flow that was around 18 inches deep(and under a rock too!)To test our detectors we slowly dug down testing the different detectors as we went. The Bug II picked up the signal about 6" the MXT around 4.5" to 5" with the 4x6 shooter. We tried the stock coil and it was faint at 3". With the stock coil I would have never even stopped it was that weak. The nugget was shaped like a good sized fingernail clipping and about the same size. For Prospecting the MXT is certainly respectable. The Gold Bug II worked better(but a one trick pony). The Minelab is an animal in that situation. One thing about the Minelab though was my buddy spent WAY to much time digging old cans and pieces of tin at two feet deep plus holes. All in all the MXT did just fine and I found some cool relics those guys did not.

The standard coil, while good for coin shooting in the park or schools is not a good coil at all in many nugget shooting situations, and I do not recommend it.

Far better for nugget shooting are the 4x6 nugget shooter (already mentioned) and the oval 9x6 DD (same general design as the standard coil on the GMT). The 9x6 gets a bit more depth.

For a whole lot of information about nugget shooting and using the MXT in general, check out my MXT website at:

I also have a whole lot of general gold prospecting information on the same website at:

Hope you enjoy these pages and find them useful.
