MXT finally arrived!!! and a question

OK, I finally made it out to the local soccer field with my new MXT for 1/2 hour tonight while my son was kicking the ball around. I found a quarter, dime, nickel, two copper pennies and a zinc. I also found a kids ring and a flag lapel pin. Very cool! Everything worked well.

Huh Huh
Now the question: While sweeping, the unit occasionally went silent... just for a fraction of a second. Is that the discriminator working on iron? The settings were coin and jewlery, ground, discrimination just left of nickel, gain at 10 and the sensitivity just so I could hear a hum. The background hum even went silent. Is that ok?

Yes, that is the discriminator working. By paying attention to how frequently the threshold drops out, you get an assessment of how trashy the site is. BTW, if you get a flicker of a good signal and a suddenly silent threshold it can indicate a good target beside something well below the discriminate setting. That is not always the case but that kind of signal patern deserves further evaluation.

Just my 2 zincs,
Bob

Thanks Bob,

Good advice! I got out and tried it at the local park today and did not worry about the way the unit was working and had a MUCH better time. 6 quarters, 7 dimes, 3 nickels, 17 pennies and a dog charm.

IT WORKED!!!

Nice bunch of finds msleeper. Is this your first exposure to metal detecting? I know the detector is new to you so judging from your finds, you are really doing very well.

I am including a link to a site operated by Chris Ralph. He has lots of good information on the site about the MXT. Pay particular attention to the "MXT FAQs".

Good luck and have fun, Bob
