MXT & Exterra 70 fun, 2nd hunt finds

New member
Local school playground = fun afternoon. Used the 5x10 DD on the E70 for first time, really like that coil, have to get the 6x10 for the MXT. Both machines performed about equal with our very limited experience. Found a gold plated penny 2005 made into a charm, first one of them I've seen. Used all metal with tracking E70 and relic on the MXT
3 rings
7 quarters
17 dimes
13 nickels

Great day, Wwace, and a super selection of finds, too.

I've got a 5x10 DD Coil also, tried it once a month ago and about went bonkers trying to figure it out:blink:. My dealer, Chuck @ Treasurehut,:nono: told me to put it away till I became more familiar with the X-70; then experiment.

Looking forward to giving the 5x10 DD a try one of these days, but for now I've still got a lot to learn:nerd:

"I've got a 5x10 DD Coil also, tried it once a month ago and about went bonkers trying to figure it out."... I would think a person would know what they might want an elliptical DD coil (or any accessory coil for that matter) to do for them before they buy it.

If the X-Terra 70 went 'bonkers' then it's either a detector related or coil related issue. If you went 'bonkers' then I would suspect it to be the same reason ... detector and/or coil. Just how did you go bonkers? What problem(s) did you have trying to use the coil? The only real issue I have ever sen anyone have through the years of working with people who have gone to a DD coil is with pinpointing, and even that's not difficult.

"My dealer, Chuck @ Treasurehut, told me to put it away till I became more familiar with the X-70; then experiment."... By now you should be 'familiar' with the X-Terra 70. Seriously, models such as the White's M6 and MXT and Minelab X-Terra 70, with their autotracking capabilities and ofter easily-set functions, combine the best of versatility with simplicity.

Did you make him a mail-order dealer or is he local to you so you can get some hands-on help?

"Looking forward to giving the 5x10 DD a try one of these days, but for now I've still got a lot to learn."... Well, what is there that you think you have to learn? That's what we're all here on the forums for, so ask away.

Regardless of the make or model detector or type of coil used, we ALL have to learn the subtle little differences that show up when using a different size and/or type of coil on a detector. You just need to get out there and use it in applications where it might serve you the best, and learn the X-T 70 and DD elliptical coil as you go.

Remember, there is no 'perfect' detector so, as we learn detectors, make sure you're attentive to both the strong points and weak points in order to get the best all-around performance.

Dick the DD is going to be more sensitive to small items including trash. You may need to lower the sensitivity a good bit when you use the DD coil but you should be able to use it. I prefer the standard coil for coin shooting. I use the DD coil in sand when it is easy to dig everything.

Monte & JohnLA:

Thanks for your concerns; I guess I made it sound worse than it probably was. When using the DD coil, I was in rather trashy conditions, and I was in just my second week with the X-70. Probably had sensitivity too high, and it was not easy to pinpoint with. Chuck's advice to me was get very comfortable using the stock coil and then give the DD a try, as it does respond differently. Quite frankly, I put the coil on not knowing what to expect.

Monte, under regular circumstances I would be used to a detector after almost two months. But we've had a month occupied by many other things in our lives and detecting has had to take a back seat. Thus the longer time needed to learn the X-70; but I am learning it and loving it, too.

Thanks again, you guys for your responses. I hope I didn't pass on the idea the X-70 is a tough one to learn; it isn't.

more detecting time.

I agree with your comment that you got it, not knowing what to expect, and you were trying to use it in a very trashy location. Not the best pick.

Way too often I read a post where someone says a larger elliptical DD coils is good for trash hunting due to the narrow field, front-to-rear. But that doesn't make sense when you also consider the much wider coverage that coil is designed to provide. Sure, it can give a very quick, short-sweep response and recovery over an isolated target, but if a site is very trashy, you can't beat a smaller-size coil. Minelab dropped the ball along the way on that offering. It's been way too long of a wait to get something in the 5"-6" size.

Yep, the X-Terra 70 is very easy to learn to use. I guess I took your earlier comment a little wrong.

Best of success to you! I hope you've got some good hunting weather and opportunities before the wintry weather arrives. It's only a couple of months out now. :(

Hey Monte, I'm the one who didn't make my message clear. The DD coil was part of Chuck@Treasurehut's Summer Special when I purchased it, and I really didn't know exactly how and where to use it. Now I'm looking forward to trying it out some this fall. Headed for FLA for the month of November to spend TG with family, and hope to get some good beach time with it. I've seen reports that the 5x10DD does great at the ocean.

And yes, things are going OK. Just a hectic few months: daughter's wedding , preparing my father-in-law's estate for a sale, which is now over, getting his home ready to sell, shopping for a new RV, and just the normal home duties. No real problems at all, just a busy time for us.

Thanks for the encouragement:clapping:

Hello Dick.....wow, you have had a busy couple of months. Just the wedding would have been enough, not to mention the other business to resolve. I hope by now you have had some time to spend with the 70?

Just want you to know that most of my X-70 customers are having success with the 5"x10" coil on very small gold items in the Prospect mode. You should do well with it on the beach! Also, please remember to slow down your sweep speed (actually good advice regardless of detector or coil) and listen to those tones first, and the meter second.

What kind of RV are you looking for, or did you buy it already? I have the Tiffen Allegro Bus, and just love it! Looking forward to your trip to Denver some day!:detecting:

Please remember, we are here to help in any way possible.

Yup, Chuck, it's been busy but rewarding, too.

Currently own a travel trailer, but are looking at motorhomes. Haven't had a chance to see Allegro units yet, but hope to in the next few weeks. Leaving for Florida in mid-October, so it will probably be with the trailer. Will be in a motorhome by spring, though.

Thanks for your support and great service, Chuck, and yes we will get to Denver; sometime soon, I hope!

I found the DD 5x10 easier to use than the stock coil.We were hunting pea gravel so it was easy to dig if a signal was unusual. After a very short time I could tell what I was going to dig up and we had a great time learning the machine and seeing what it would uncover next.
This was basically my first time with this machine since we returned the first one because of a bad power switch, later that night we went to a new school and it was very barren, but the first signal I got was a 56 wheat in good condition.

Wwace: Were you running in Patterns or Prospecting Mode when using the 5x10DD? If in Prospecting mode, where was the Iron Mask level and Sensitivity set? Thanks:thumbup:
