Has anyone used the MXT in Australia for Gold Nuggets. I'm headed there in a few months? Any info. or tips will be helpful.

If you check out the Yank-Aussie Prospecting Forum there's a guy that sometimes post on The MXT Forum.
He goes by the name Aussie MXT and he seems very knowledgeable on gold detecting with the MXT.

There's a lot of earlier posts on here about finding gold in Australia. Lots of gold with the MXT! Go to the search tab and HH, Nancy

Hi there cessna,

I hope you enjoy your stay when you come to Australia. I hunt the goldfields of western NSW with my MXT. The majority of our goldfields are best hunted with a PI machine which seem to be more sensitive to small gold which is still very abundant. However every goldfield has a place where the MXT is the best unit to be hunting with. The PI machines can't operate under powerlines or as in my local spot along underground telephone lines. Similarly you can't beat the discrimination our machines give us. Heavy trash areas are abandoned by the others because they have to dig everything. With the 5.3 coil and using the Variable SAT I can punch deep between the junk and even hear the seperate targets that are right next to each other.

My 6 x 10 DD eliptical is not sensitive enough for the small gold so now I only use the 5.3 or the 18x15 SEF Butterfly coil. This big SEF coil is still sensitive my smallest target being a 0.2 gram split shot lead. My biggest tip would be this. When you have a signal but it's not strong enough for the unit to identify or even give you an on screen reading then this is the type of target that is more likely to be gold. Most of the easy big gold has been found. you will want to focus on the small sub grammers to 5gram bits. You won't miss any big targets. If you go about and detect as if you would on the beach for coins then you will probably not score any gold.

I've only found a couple of small patches where the mineralisation was too much for the MXT. I mentioned that last weekend to a couple of mates with PI machines who said they had trouble at those places too.

If you are coming all this way the best places to go would be Western Australia. They're still finding virgin patches all over the place out there but the area is so vast you will have to do some research. The next best place is the golden triangle in the state of Victoria. If you look those up you'll be able to find people in those area's who can help you out.

Keep in contact I can meet you at my local field for a day if you like. There is a guy on the Aussie - yank prospecting forum called B.T. he's a real pro who gets out detecting more and finds a lot more gold than me. He also lives in the middle of the golden triangle. He can put you onto gold.

Thanks for the vote of confidence Joel...

cheers Dicko..

Cessna,

What "Dicko" said about "BT" is quite correct. I know him personally and he is very knowledgeable about the MXT.
He works in Dunolly in Victoria which is in the heart of the famous "Golden Triangle". I just happen to live in Dunolly

We haven't heard from BT for a while. He used to stop in and say Hi from time to time and show off some great Aussie finds.

Thanx for all Ya'lls replies, and keep them coming. We hope to come to AU soon. Also, when are the best weather months to plan our trip?

August through to november would by my pic. End of winter, spring and start of summer. They're my favourite for getting out in the bush detecting. If you love fishing then come in the autumn months. The barramundi fishing in our Northern country is at it's peak during the "run-off" at the end of april.
