MXT Display Problem

wyoming

New member
I am having an issue with my visual display and was wondering if anybody else has had this problem. When I turn on the machine, I don't get a visual read out on the display. The machine is working fine because of the tones it is making on known objects. This does not happen all the time and it is hit and miss. I can turn it on ten times and seven of those times I get no reading. I would say that it is just glitch and have a Whites Tech check it out but this is the second machine I have had this trouble with. I purchased my first machine in October of 2005 and within a month the machine developed the same problem. I sent it back to Whites and they sent me a new machine. I have used this machine for about a year (100 hours on it) and now the new machine has developed the same problem. I have changed the batteries and the machine has never been abused or damaged. Am I just unlucky or is this something that others have dealt with on the MXT?

It seemed that there were a number of these reports shortly after the MXT came out and then the chatter died down. I, personally have had it happen a couple of times on my MXT last year but it has not returned since then. My wife also has an MXT and has not experienced this blanking issue at all.

Each time I had the display blank out on me, I just powered off and then back on and it cleared the condition. If you are tech saavy, you could open the main box an reseat the IC's to see if this helps. Other than that, it is back to Sweet Home for their analysis.

Thanks Butch. Out of curiosity, when it happend to you did the weather play any role in the problem? I was using the machine the other day and it was not that cold, around 45 degrees, and I noticed that diplay lettering looked like chinese. Only half of the characters were illuminated. When I let the machine heat up inside the house the display went back to normal when it would display. I will send it back to Whites anyway to get checked out but I hate losing hunting time. Thanks for your insight.

Wyoming, I have had the display apart once on my MXT. It is not that hard to get it back together, I was looking into adding a LED to have a lighted display, there is a connector from the main box that could be loose or have a bad connection. By the way where in Wyoming are you at? I was raised in Riverton, lived in Rock Springs and Evanston 11 years ago. T.C.Boise

I live in Cody. Did you do much detecting when you were here? I love to go on the old Bridger trail and Oregon trail down in Jeffrey City. There are so many old ghost towns and camping spots along the trails that I find some great stuff. Those people sure chucked alot of stuff off the wagons. Thanks for the tip. I think I will send it back to Whites this time because of the warranty. I will remember that in the future though. What kind of detecting do you do now?

I would not consider weather as a factor. I have had it happen on a nice summer day and a cool and windy fall day.

When it happened, I did notice a change in the audio sound. It sounded a bit more worbally, (if that is a word. ;) ) although the MXT still worked, the display was completely blank for me.

Wyoming, I have only been detecting for a year or so, I first bought the Whites GMT thinking I could find gold in the Boise basin, not yet. Then I got a Fisher 1225-X off of e-bay, that was better for in town, then I got to reading this forum about the MXT and got one of those off of e-bay. Kind of went about it backwards, so most of the time coin shooting in the parks. Do you know any Johnsons or Christophersons in that part of Wyoming? That is where my parents are from, my mom is going to take me to where her mother was raised, the old log house is still standing, may be able to find something of interest there. it's maybe happened 5 times since I purchased the MXT. ( Shortly after it came out). Usually happens when it is cold. As an electronics engineer I would say that what ever connects the display to the main circuit is causing the problem.
